I feel uncomfortable as eyes are on me as I walk towards my locker.
"Hey" says Sam joining me. "What's up?"
"Nothing" I say. "Everyone is just looking at me. It's weird. Do I have a dork sign taped to my back?"
"No, wait" she checks me. "Yeah you're clear."
I grab my books and head to math. Which is my favourite subject. It's kinda ruined when I come into class and everyone is still staring at me. What did I do?
"She's such a nerd" someone says. It's Lauren.
I stare at her hoping I look menacing. She just laughs.
"Hey princess" she says. "Did you have fun on the weekend."
"Yeah" I say. "Except the fact that I had to come back and see you was sad because... well for obvious reasons." I wave my hand in front of my mouth to signal she has bad breath even though she doesn't. None the less, the class still laughed.
Lauren's eye twitches but she pastes a smile on her face and turns her head to the front.
"I swear the number of times you stood up and made Lauren look like a fool is hilarious" says Sam.
So class went by one by one. The only two people that didn't stare at me when I entered each class is Sam and Will and Will is only in two of my classes.
"Hey" says Laura as she runs up to me and we run side by side, just like we used to. "How are you?"
"You care because?"
"Because we're friends. What has gotten up to you recently? You haven't responded to my texts, phone calls, or when I try to talk to you."
"I swear you said we weren't. Make up you mind. Besides what happened with talking to Lauren and her group? Ditch you already or did you ditch them?"
She slows down clearly hurt by my last comment. Hurt but not as much as me. "Ditch?" she asks. "Is that what you think I've done to you? No you don't understand. I wanted you to be in Lauren's group too. She told me she already asked you but you said no. So after she got mad at you she wanted your number. She said she'd give you another chance."
"For your information, Lauren lied. She texts me but she texts rude things and calls me bad names."
"What! That can't be true. Lauren is a really nice person..."
"Look" I say loudly. "You obviously don't know a thing about her." I stop running and she does too. "Who are you going to trust? Lauren or me?"
She hesitates. "I just don't see Lauren doing something like that."
I sigh and tears form in my eyes as well as hers. "I just don't see us as friends anymore then."
The words sting me as much as they sting her. It's not her saying it where she can change her mind and we'd be friends again but it's me and she can tell I'm serious. I pick up my speed again with the wind thrashing to my face making my eyes cold. I don't stop though. Nothing can.
