Two.
My cab was making its way through the campus’ main road. Once the driver left me at the parking lot I’d have to make my way from there towards the administration’s office somehow.
I couldn’t stop looking through the window one way and the other. Green grass covered every inch of surface I lay eyes upon; the buildings were made of bright red bricks; students who returned for another year at uni could be seen everywhere saluting each other, hugging each other, talking loudly and screaming excitedly. For the first time in two weeks I was definitely looking forward to this fresh start.
“Here we go, miss. That’ll be $25 dollars”, the cab owner said looking at me through his rearview mirror.
“Here ya go”, I said while he stepped out of the car and went to retrieve my suitcase from the bunk of the car.
I stayed inside the vehicle for a few more minutes. This was it. Once I stepped outside there was no turning back. Once I hopped out of the car I’d have to let go of the past I was so eager to remember once and for all.
“Miss?”, the driver startled me by knocking on my window.
With a sigh and without much further thought, I opened the door.
“First time, huh?”, the man guessed as he delivered me my case.
I nodded shyly.
“Don’t you worry. You seem like a nice kid. Just follow the crowd”, he advised me.
I couldn’t help laughing. That was honestly good advice considering my situation.
“Thank you, sir. Have a nice day”, I finally smiled at him.
He saluted me once with his fancy driver’s hat, got in his car and drived away.
I looked around only once and saw that I was the only one standing in the parking lot. Everyone else seemed to know where to go.
Seeing a line of students going in the same direction, I decided to follow them, just like my car journey friend had suggested.
Luckily for me, I made it to the administration’s office after all. There weren’t that many people waiting to complete their registration so I waited for my turn.
While I did that a young guy with a couple of papers in hand approached me with a big smile on his face.
“Hi there. You’re new, right?”.
“Is it that obvious?”, I smiled at him.
“Got an eye out for freshmen”, he joked. “I’m Tom. I’m a uni counselor so it’s pretty much my job to welcome you to Manchester University!”, he overacted his excitement.
“Yay! Someone finally said that! That makes you the first person I can officially say I know here”.
“Ah, that’s bittersweet”, he wrinkled his nose at me. “Anyways, I’m supposed to give you this campus map and ask you your major”.
“Arts”, I responded proudly.
“Then this…”, he looked for a pink paper before handing it over, “is your schedule. And this”, he handed over a poster, “is the freshman’s itinerary”.
“What’s that?”, I asked confused.
“Well, it’s a series of events that have been organized for people to meet other people, for people like you to make friends. Now where do you stand at sororities?”.
“Uhm, I’d like to join one?”, I lamely responded.
“Close enough. This is a list of sororities that are recruiting new members. You’ll find their respective houses in the map I gave you. So just, basically, go to whichever one you want and talk to them. They’ll guide you through the recruitment process”.
“You are a lifesaver”, I thanked him.
“Any time. Any questions?”.
“Nope. I think I’ll be fine”.
“Here’s my number in case you need me. You worried me there when you said you didn’t know anybody”, he said writing down his number with a pen on one of the papers he’d given me.
“Smooth”, I teased.
“Wanna see you at the Hello Freshmen’s party tonight”, he said walking backwards, already going away, whilst pointing a finger at me.
“We’ll see”, I called after him.
And as I examined the list of sororities he’d given me there was one name that stood out from all others:
Stereo Kicks.
