Ben's brown eyes showed nothing but distain towards the man across from him. His face grimaced each time the older Jedi facing him would make a slight movement. Meanwhile, his uncle shared the same emotions in his own blue eyes. Neither man knew who had stared the staring contest, yet both refused to be the first to end it.
Luke leaned back on the black marbled counter behind him and slowly took sips of his caf. Occasionally blowing the steam from it in an effort to chill his drink. Still, when the red mug touched his lips, Luke's eyes never lost focused on the dark clad man in front of him. "Sorry I missed the wedding." The legend Jedi stated.
Across from Luke, Ben mirrored his uncle's stance with his own red mug in hand. Ben's hair was somewhat out of place with a few strands sticking out, particularly those on the back of his head. His still face modeled sleep, having been woken up by clanks coming from his ship's small kitchen. Ben slowly rose from his shared bed with Rey, not wanting to wake his pregnant wife, and followed the noise. His lightsaber was drawn and ready to defend his family, though when he reached the noise, it was that of his uncle rummaging around, looking for something.
Luke's back was turned to Ben as he opened and closed the black cabinets. "Put that away." His voice was calm. "If I wanted to kill you in your sleep, you would have been dead by now." The Jedi squatted down and opened another cabinet. "Where's the caf?" Ben reluctantly deactivated his blue lightsaber and walked around a small island, towards a hidden pantry. Luke was impressed by the secret compartment, no doubt it was placed onto the ship to save space. Once he had located what he sought, Luke looked upon the variety there was to offer. "Fancy stuff, kid."
After opening the pantry, Ben stood by the kitchen's opened door, waiting for his uncle's next move. "A sunrise blend?" Luke whistled, impressed. "I haven't had this in years. Not since the last time I touched another planet." Luke then placed the expensive beans onto the caf maker and pressed a button. He finally turned to face his nephew, noting the bed hair and wrinkled pajamas. "Leia said I could help myself to whatever provisions you have. I can't tell you the last time I've had a decent meal."
They stood there in silence until the caf maker beeped, stating the hot liquid was ready to pour. Luke had found mugs neatly secured in one of the cabinets. He poured caf into the two cups and slid one across the small island towards Ben. Knowing there was no way in hell he would go back to sleep, especially seeing his uncle in his ship, Ben took the mug and leaned back on a counter.
"That's okay," Ben replied, "You weren't invited."
Luke smirked and slowly shook his head in amusement. "I walked your mom down the aisle. She looked radiant." He said, taking another sip of his drink.
Ben eyed his uncle, wanting to know what game he was playing at. "I've seen the holovids and pictures."
"I remember Han was hammered by the end of it and Chewie wept how he was losing his best friend. Leia and I had to tear them apart by the end of the night. Your old man even wanted Chewie to join them on their honeymoon. 'He deserves a vacation too' Is what he said."
Ben placed his mug down, exhaling in annoyance. He spoke about his dad rarely, having not come to terms with his death and the role he had played on it. "What do you want?"
Luke drank the rest of his caf before setting his own mug down. He did not want to start an argument, again, like they had the day before. "I promised your mom I would try to be civil with you." He confessed. "But only if you do the same. I suspect you do not want to start swinging lightsabers in here and waking up your family."
"It's better to swing them in here than have you hovering over them in their sleep."
"Listen." Luke paused for a moment, trying his best to calm down. "I'm not doing this. I promised your mother and she mentioned how Rey would back her up one hundred percent on not having us kill each other."
Ben rolled his eyes. Of course, his mom and Rey wanted peace in the family and would not shy away from reprimanding any conflict from the two Jedi. "I suppose it would be traumatic for Oli and Jade to see their great uncle slain by their dad."
"I am sure they can handle it. By the way," Luke inquired, "I've noticed you call your son by his middle name and not by his first." When Ben did not reply, Luke pressed further. "You name him after you father and yet, you can't stop seeing what you did to him."
Ben held his anger in as best as he could. "On second thought, I think my children will find it amusing if I kill the bad man from their bedtime stories."
"I think having me force throw you across the field would be much more entertaining." Rey's voice echoed in the small kitchen. She shook her head in disapproval towards both men. Rey walked towards her husband and gave him a good morning peck on the lips. "Sleep well, love?" Her hair was a mess, more than Ben's, and her green pajama top made her pregnancy show even more so than usual. Rey took a small sip from Ben's caf on the counter. "Morning." She said to Luke.
Luke smiled in respond and moved away from the counter when Rey shooed him with her hand. "Kids will be up soon." She yawned. "Will you be joining us for breakfast, Luke?" Rey took out some kessinnamon rolls from the small fridge. "Love, pancakes or...? Rey asked her husband.
"I wouldn't mind a nice gartro omelet." Luke chimed in. "If you have the ingredients."
Rey took what she needed from the fridge and placed them onto the island. "It's one of mom's favorite. I'll make sure to make two. I'm making the twins pancakes." She felt Ben's annoyance in their bond and looked up at him. "Love, some iktotch toast?"
Ben shook his head and quietly exited the kitchen. "He is annoyed you're having breakfast with us." Rey informed while she took a pan out from a cabinet. "I'm thankful you are trying. I'll talk to him again, he will come around," Rey sighed, "eventually...with any luck."
Luke began helping the young empress by cracking the eggs and taking out other ingredients needed for the family's meal. "I go back to me pleading with you not to go to him. Do you remember? Seeing him with your children and the way he is with you," he sighed, "I was wrong to think he had turned."
Rey smiled warmly at Luke, wanting to ease her former master's feelings. "There is still conflict in him. Not as much but it is there. It was hard at first but now...now it's not our main focus."
Luke flipped the omelet and added some ingredients. "How?" he was curious.
Rey poured milk into the pancake batter and began to whip it. "How did he overcome his dark nature?" Rey thought carefully. "With love." She smiled wide, reminiscing the days she first noticed Ben's change. "I listened to him, felt what he failed to say, praised his goodness, but in the end...the only thing I had to do was love him and made sure he knew I did."
Luke recalled a young Ben, a mere boy, only wanting to train to be a great Jedi just like his uncle. Though often he would sit by himself with a confusion expression as if he was doing something wrong by being there. Ben would not speak much to anyone but yet, his eyes yearned for company. "I failed him." Luke quietly admitted. He turned to face Rey. "Not only as a master but as his family."
Luke's mind went to the two little children he had met the previous day. Their eyes full of light and hope, just like Ben's when he was their age. They both reminded him of his nephew in a way and perhaps Ben would have turned out great if only he had comforted him and let him know it was okay to go to him with any question, regardless of their nature. Luke knew Ben would have been one, if not, the best Jedi of his generation. Having seen Han and Jade, he knew what he had to do to amend. "I will not fail your children. I promise you."
