Chapter 10

Me: Don't say any names, there are cameras everywhere.

He took us back to S.T.A.R. Labs.

B: Leave us alone.

He said abruptly to everyone and they left. It's the first time that I see him so furious.

Me: Calm down. I had a reason for doing that.

B: Which was what? Dying?

Me: I was determined to either put him in jail or die trying. You don't know what I've been through because of that man.

B: Tell me. I want to know.

Me: I don't, because you will not want to do anything with me afterwards. The only person who knows is Luke.

B: We've all been through some tough situations. I saw my mom getting murdered and my dad going to jail, even though he was an innocent man. I kept telling them that and no one believed me.

Me: Yes, you may have lost your mother, but you gained another dad and two siblings, Iris and Wally... when my own mother wanted nothing to do with me. She left me with that gang to pay off her debts. I had to do whatever they said, or else the consequences were all these marks you see on my body. The only person I could count on was David, and I helped him escape; which made his little brother, Chad, furious. Chad was always jealous because I chose his brother over him and when I was alone, he got the chance to do everything he wanted. When I didn't follow his orders, he tortured and raped me. A few days after I turned 18, they wanted to make me an official member of their gang. My task was to kill an innocent person and because I didn't, he punished me in the same way. That night, I decided to get away. That's when I met Luke. And when I started thinking that I could move on, he found me and hurt me again. That's why I decided to go there. Happy now? I told you everything.

Barry was standing there, shocked from what I just confessed to him.

B: I'm sorry... I had no idea. –He came closer and placed his hands on my cheeks.- You have to understand that you are not alone anymore. I don't want you to get hurt. I care about you.

He said and then kissed me. When his lips left mine, he said something I didn't expect to hear.

B: Do you want to be with me?

Me: Yes, I want to. I may not trust other people easily, or maybe never, but I feel like I can trust you.

As I was inches away from his lips, Cisco walked in.

Ci: Um... why is there blood on your shirt?

Me: You ruined our moment.

B: You are bleeding.

Me: It's nothing. The guards punched me and my stitches came loose.

Ci: Doesn't it hurt?

Me: No, I'm used to it. Anyway, most of my wounds have healed on their own. Please, don't say anything to Luke, because he'll get worried for no reason. Everything is done now.

B: We won't say anything.

The week went by fast. Barry would come at my place to look after me. A few days later, when I met with Luke, he asked me to look after his son, because he would go searching for his daughter. At the same time, he would renovate his business.

The next day, Luke and his wife came and dropped Nolan at my place.

Me: You can leave your bags in this room –I said pointing at our guest room- and when you're comfortable, come join us for breakfast.

Barry was making his specialty. After a while, he joined us and sat at the table. He looked angry.

Me: I know you wanted to stay on your own and thought that you didn't need to come here, but you'll see; the three of us will have fun.

We had breakfast and then he stayed in his room. In the evening, Barry and I were sitting alone in the living room and his phone rang. He left and I was alone with Nolan. At some point, he got out of the room to get some water.

Me: Come join me, don't be alone.

He came and sat next to me.

Me: Look, I understand that you think you are old enough to live on your own, but Luke is worried. We will have a good time; we can do things you like.

N (Nolan): What I do and the videogames I play... you don't know them.

Me: What games do you play?

N: Tekken, for example.

Me: I can beat you with my eyes closed.

He brought the games and we played until Barry came back. Obviously, I won. Then we saw a movie together. We had some pop-corn with it and then headed to sleep.

The next day, we gave him a tour of S.T.A.R. Labs. We stayed at the labs all day and luckily nothing happened, so the alarm didn't go off. As we were lounging and chatting, Nolan asked

N: Who's your favorite hero in Central City?

Me: Mine is Flash!

B: Mine's Melody!

We said at the same time, looked at each other and smiled.

N: Oh, she is my favorite hero as well.

Everyone else chose themselves, using their code names of course.

We headed home and the week went by with Nolan. The best thing was that when Luke was back and came to get him home, Nolan didn't want to leave.

Me: How did it go?

L: Vanessa, come over to the shop tonight to see it and have a chat.

When it was time, Barry and I got ready and headed over there. Luke and I went somewhere so we could talk privately.

Me: So, what happened? Did you find your daughter?

L: Yes, about that... since the first moment we met, we trusted each other and you know that I see you as my daughter.

Me: Yes, and I look at you like a father.

L: That's happening because it's the truth.

Me: What do you mean?

L: I am your father and you are my daughter. (I was speechless) If you think about it, it makes sense. From the beginning we had a unique relationship, like father-daughter... and Vanessa; I wouldn't want anyone else to be my daughter. I found the best one.

Me: Luke, I am so glad that you are my father, honestly... I just don't know what to do, how to react.

L: What do you say you start by calling me, dad.

Me: I would really like that dad.

We headed back inside, I told Barry that I am Luke's daughter and the next day we made it official. I have a last name now, I'm not just Vanessa. I am Vanessa Lovely.
