Upon the arrival of a stray soldier at Trost's gates three days after the 45th Expedition beyond the walls, Erwin Smith dispatched a team as part of an Emergency Rescue Operation after learning that there were roughly 7 survivors out there—all of which were the soldiers they had been considered 'missings' due to the sudden storm, separating nearly half the troop from the formation.
Despite the higher-ups arguing that the survivors were a lost cause, the boy, no more than 16, fought to save the survivors. He only made it back because there was another who made his trip possible. He owed his life to the woman who put him on the horse and forced him to ride to Trost without her. She stayed back to protect the injured.
Having heard his story, Erwin was willing to risk it to retrieve the survivors, especially the aforementioned soldier—who the kid described single-handedly took down 16 titans while paving a path towards safety.
The kid said they were not too far out, taking shelter at a tower in a village north east of Shiganshina. Though hopeful, the group went into the mission with no high expectations.
Reaching the location of the village, they passed by a field drenched in blood, mangled with severed soldiers and civilians, rubble and debris. Several titan corpses laid in steam, the smell of the village was awful. In the middle of it all stood one single soldier, a female, taking on a 7-meter class titan and two 4-meter titans. She was quick on her feet, skillfully dancing around the titan's grasping hands, using the titans against one another.
A small delay in the titan's moment gave her just enough time to grapple the hook on the 4 meter's neck and manoeuvre around the titan simultaneously ripping it's nape apart with her blades. She released her hooks immediately grappling onto the 7 meter's forehead.
She swung up and dived down, the force and speed giving her the extra push to behead the 7-meter titan. Her stained steaming blades cut through the nape of the other. As the two enormous titans collapsed on the remaining smaller 4-meter. She wasted no time, ending it's life.
The company rushed to her rescue. Taking Erwin Smith by surprise, the frontline soldiers knocked off their horses, tripping over what had seemed to be wires. As if on command, the woman continued her attack in a fit of madness. They walked right into a trap. That's how she had survived. The makeshift traps she had laid out bought her enough time to injure 3 soldiers. Levi dispatched his squad to subdue the crazed woman.
They were fast, they teamwork displayed perfectly. But the girl was smart; she knew how to break the team up and use them to take one another out. It was a pretty dirty but impressive trick. She went one-on-one with Levi. Witnesses said it was a fight the world needed to see. Cuts on her bare skin didn't seem to faze her; she had still managed to move like a snake, hitting where he would least expect. It took some time before Levi wore her down enough to pin her down.
Levi's blades ate into the skin of her palms as he yelled at her to snap out of it. In the reflection of the blade, she saw multiple clothed feet and finally snapped out of her trance, surrendering.
For a moment there, she couldn't tell foe from ally. Her head throbbing like she had woken up from a terrible nightmare. Erwin counted 15 disintegrating skeletal remains. She must have had fought for hours upon hours alone, with her senses heightened; every sound, every movement was a warning bell. The overwhelming fear and paranoia of it being a titan were enough to drive someone insane. Yet here she was, alive, in one piece.
