Y/N paled at the sight of the crest, stamped on in dark red ink on the canvas tarp. And so she was not mistaken. She avoided the Captain's gaze, digging her nails into the soft flesh of her palms to control her emotions.

"Scheider?"

She took a long and sharp breath knowing that there were eyes on her. She calmed her features, and shook her head. "It looks like some wannabe gang. It might be difficult to find a group like that, may it be that they're a small crime group," she lied through her teeth, the sweetest smile on her face. Y/N was a good liar-though, it was nothing to be proud of-years of living under her father's roof honed her lying skills, but if one knew her well enough, they'd catch it very quickly.

She glanced at Levi as if to say, "Later."

"That's a bummer than, ain't it?" one of the police huffed. "Looks like we're wasting our time here."

"If you're so keen on going home, brat, then just shut your trap and leave. Your presence here contributes nothing to the case," Levi suggested. Though the the man towered the Captain, the police swallowed his saliva, backing away, ears red from embarrassment.

"Look around, Scheider, maybe you could recognise something else," Levi ordered, staring down the MPs.

"Yes, sir!"

Y/N looked through the goods. As she had expected, it was a whole bunch of nothing. These mattered to the group as much as dirt. Not finding anything worth her attention, she stood up, shaking her head, signalling the Captain of her findings. He nodded.

Just as she walked back, she felt her body lurch forward at the sudden impact. She gasped feeling something rough slip into her back pocket. She stumbled forward, catching herself before she fell.

"Hey! Watch it!" she barked. The older male, a senior member of the Military Police, glared at her.

"You were in my way, woman," he grunted. "A pretty woman like you shouldn't be here."

"And rats like you should?" she snapped back, a sly smirk on her face.

The man's face turned red, he raised his hand. "Why you, b-" Y/N flinched expectant of the stinging pain, but it never came. She peeked her eyes open, Levi stopped the man's hand before it landed on her face.

"It's rude to hit a woman, slug," he warned. "Didn't your mother, teach you that?" If looks could kil, the man would be dead by now; Levi's cold gaze was a weapon on its own.

The man snatched his hand away, rubbing at his wrist, spitting into the ground. "Scout scum," he muttered walking away. Levi turned to his lover.

"You shouldn't provoke a situation, Scheider," he advised.

"But he started it..." She muttered under her breath.

"What are you? Fucking 5?" he scolded. She looked down at her feet muttering an apology. "Forget it, let's go. It looks like there's nothing left for is to do here."

She followed him back to his study, where privacy was guaranteed. Levi couldn't help but notice how anxious she was. As soon as the door closed, he confronted her, "What are you not telling me?" he asked.

"Um..." Y/N didn't know where to begin. There were things she suspected-which would prove detrimental to the case if her assumption was wrong. She moved closer to him, paranoid that someone might be listening through the walls.

"The crest is one of Sina's most notorious syndicates. I think they might have planted a mole within the Regiment," she whispered to him.

"And what makes you think that?" he asked.

"Call it a gut feeling. As far as I know, this gang doesn't do things without meaning. Leaving a wagon fool of useless shit is nothing but a distraction."

"I trust you but a gut feeling, isn't going to help us solve anything," he pointed out the obvious, "What do you know about this gang and how involved you are with them?"

She thought long and hard about the answer, choosing her words very carefully. "Let's put it this way: I've been in trouble with them before I enlisted into the military. I can tell you the two words to describe them are driven and bat-shit crazy. I barely escaped."

"What did you do?"

She looked to her feet, the truth refusing to come out. She chewed on her inner cheek, the slight pain keeping her emotions grounded. "It's a private matter, Captain. It doesn't relate to the case."

Levi stepped forward pulling her into a hug-he thought she needed a sense of security. "It's too obvious that you're anxious, relax," he whispered in her ear. She laid her head on his chest listening to the calm, rhythmic thumps of his heartbeat. He drew circles on her back as his mother did for him when he was young and scared.

"I'm sorry," she apologized looking up at him, "There is much I want to tell you, but it's not the right time..."

"Take as much time as you need." Levi didn't want to push her out of respect for her privacy.

"However, I do know that me keeping things will affect the case and prolong it uneccessarily," she acknowledged, looking up at Levi. "A week. It's all I ask for. Give me a week to investigate on my own."

"You have a team to-"

"I know," she interrupted, pulling away from him. "I don't want to loop you guys into my private issues."

Levi leaned against his desk. "3 days," he negotiated. "A week is too long."

"4 days?"

"3 days. Take it or leave it, Scheider."

Y/N nodded. "3 days it is, Captain." She brought her hand up to her chest, bowing her head in gratitude. "I'll tell you everything in 3 days."

"Promise?"

"Promise," she kissed him on a cheek.

He pinched her nose ligjtly, "Don't overwork yourself, brat. You're still in recovery." Levi's hands dropped to her waist as she stood in between his legs.

"Have I ever?" She raised an eyebrow.

"A good chunk of your time, yes."

She rolled her eyes, not wanting to admit that he was right. "I should get going. I'm assuming my 3 days start tomorrow?" She asked her fingers playfully walking up his chest, resting on his shoulder.

"Well, I'm not a prick. Dinner is coming about, there's no point starting the 3 days now. I don't have the time to be so calculative."

She smiled, grateful for his understanding of her situation. "You can rely on me," she promised, reassured him.

"I trust you, though if you break your promise I might have to punish...or reprimand you," he joked-maybe, maybe not. Y/N slapped his chest, grinning as her dirty mind fully processed what the Captain had implied.

"I'll see you at dinner, Levi," she bid goodbye.

"I'll see you soon, Y/N."

With that she began following her suspicions starting from the hidden stack of diaries hidden inside her closet under a false bottom and the dried bark shoved into her palm earlier-a silent, wordless request to meet at the same spot at midnight. It was something they used to do while she lived under her father's roof.

Protect one another, for another.

It was their promise to one another. Almost 8 years after, it was surprising that to both that the other still held on to it with their lives.

Much apologies for the late update, I've been pretty tired lately and pretty much passed out editing this chapter. Thank you for making it this far into the book. I can't believe we're 20 chapters in. I started out this book as something fun didn't think it would go this far, so thank you. Your support has rekindled my love for writing and will continue to consistently write.
