'I don't think it's okay to say that.''And why is that?'
'You're hurting her feelings!!'
Lola stared straight ahead, paying no heed to whatever scene that was before her absent self. She could barely grasp onto whatever was being said. She zoned out many times these days.
Four days, four emotionally grueling days without as much as a text from him.
She went about her days moping around the house. Did she let her business suffer? Of course not, but she was mostly absent and had to hand over certain jobs to her assistants. She needed to clear her head.
She heaved a long sigh and got up, she picked me up the remote and switched off the huge Television set mounted in her living room courtesy of the one who's name shall not be mentioned. Silence, that was all she heard afterwards, she hated it. It was way too quiet, she needed more than anything, someone to vent to about her emotional turmoil.
In only some moments later, with her car keys in hand she was out the door. There was only one place to be at such a time and there she went.
****
"Ahhhhh!!!"
Lola heard an ear piercing scream the moment she stepped out of her vehicle. She halted abruptly, trying to confirm if she had heard correctly.
"Ahhhhhhhh!"
There it was again, that gut wrenching scream. She could tell who owned that voice anytime, any day. She quickened her pace and stealthily let herself into the house. Nothing prepared her for the scene before her.
There she was, breathing heavily, sweating profusely and writhing in pain. Cold sweat broke out on Lola's worry creased forehead as she took in the sight before her. She rushed to her friend's side, in haste.
"Tana! Oh my goodness, what's going on? Where's Tunji?" Lola asked so many questions at once forgetting her friend was in no place to answer as such.
"The baby's coming! I'm in freaking labo..." Tana couldn't complete her statement as another contraction hit her.
Oh goodness! Lola did not sign up for this. Here she was coming to vent about her relationship troubles and here was her best friend in labour with her (Tana's) husband nowhere in sight.
She swung straight into action, pushing her thoughts aside. She was about to become a god mother, she would act as such. She did her best and finally managed to get Tana up on her feet. They were slowly making their way to the front door when the loud screeching of tires halted them for a second.
"Babe!!!" That was Tunji, he rushed into the room looking like a mad man on the loose. He had on his work clothes, apparently rushing in from his office. He reached for Tana who glared hatefully at him, making him gulp.
"I'll go get the bag..." He took the flight of stairs in haste and before one could blink, he was back, handing the bag to a panic striken Lola.
Lola had never seen Tana in such a state before. Who was she kidding? Tana had never been pregnant before, she almost face palmed herself at the thought.
"Tunji, I don't think she can walk any longer, you should carry her cause she needs all the energy right now." Lola suggested, concernedly holding on to her wailing friend.
Tunji nodded, nervously reaching for the obviously salty Tana. She slapped his hands away and continued making her way towards the car slowly in Lola's hold.
He shrugged when Lola gave him a questioning look. Tana was sure a drama queen.
He rushed ahead, turned the car around and when they finally got in, he sped off without delay.
