"A break? What exactly are you saying?" She questioned shakily.

"I'm saying that we need some time apart to figure ourselves out."

"But we can work things out. Babe it hasn't come to this." She said in a rush.

"I honestly do not think we can. We need some time apart."  He got on his feet and she followed frantically.

"David, there has to be some other way to sort this out." She felt a tear drop before she knew it.

"Babe come on, don't cry." He caught the tear rolling with his thumb while he whispered.

"This is for the best. Let's focus on ourselves and decide on a way forward after this time." He tried placating her with his words but it was not helping, not one bit.

She shook her head vigorously like a petulant child, holding on to him like her life depended on it.

"I love you. But this is for the best." He said and dropped a parting kiss on her forehead before forcing himself out the door.

She sat still for a long time staring at the door longingly, wishing he would come back and tell her it was a prank, that he was just kidding.

She shook her head back and forth. He was going to come for her. He would never leave her just like that.

But, a week went by, then another and another and soon it was over a month. There wasn't as much as a call from him. There and then she knew she had to do something and quickly too.

It was a Sunday afternoon and she was sure he would be home. She planned out her day and after the church service she decided to prepare a sumptuous meal of coconut rice and some sauced chicken garnished with a rich salad. Just what he liked.

She packaged it up nicely and went on to take a shower. Casually dressed in blue jeans, a black polo t-shirt and some sneakers, she put on her sunglasses. She did not have the energy for make up so she set out barefaced.

"Ah ah Miss Lola, happy Sunday o!" She heard her newly married neighbor holler from her balcony. She looked up and smiled.

"Hi Mrs Nora. Happy Sunday." She said cooly.

"Heading over to boify's I presume?" Nora probed and Lola tried not to pick offense with how this woman was always tried prying into her life.

"Yeah." She answered. Obviously Nora had seen David come over on several occasions.

"I'm sure you made a nice meal that would make him pop the question." Nora said teasingly and it annoyed her.

But, as always, she kept it together and gave her nosy neighbour a tight lipped smile. This neighbour of hers always had a way of rubbing it in her face that she was younger and married. It irked her to no end because she could not call her out on it. The woman had never directly mocked her and there was nothing she could call her out for except the biting sarcasm that only Lola could denote in her tone.

"Sure." Without wasting anymore time, she pulled her car door open and got in.

She drove out of the large premises and soon found herself on the highway. Due to traffic, the fourty minute ride took over an hour. His place was pretty much a distance from hers and his office was even farther away but she made the trip from time to time.

She honked as soon as she arrived at the gate.

"Ah madam!" Musa, the security guard saluted as soon as he saw her.

"Good afternoon madam."

"Good afternoon. Is he in?" She questioned.

"Yes ma." He said sounding strange. She thought nothing of it as she drove into the premises, parked her vehicle properly and got out with the hamper she had for him.
