David sat by his office window, staring out into space. Heavy on his mind was the one woman who completed him in more ways than she knew but she was at it again, messing with his feelings as usual.

He rocked his swivel chair back and forth, staring down at the busy city streets beneath. His fingers drummed on the arm rests of the plush leather seat absentmindedly. He had been trying to reach her all day but as she usually did whenever they fought, she was ignoring him.

He knew Lola wanted him to pop the question already but how could he explain he was not ready for such a big step at this point? It was frustrating for him. He loved her to pieces but marriage is not something to be rushed, he knew better than to take such a big step under immense pressure, experience taught him so.

The seemingly shrill sound of his cell's ringtone pierced the room, jolting him out of his neverending thought process.

He reached for the device and picked it up in one swift move. He glanced at the caller ID and scowled deeply. This was not the time for such a call but he knew she was going to keep calling until he picked up. He slid the green icon and leaned back on his seat.

"Heyyy, baby boy!"

He cringed at the high pitched sound that hit his ears as soon as she spoke and immediately regretted wearing his airpods.

"Hi mom." He said in a clipped tone, fighting to keep his tone from being angered.

"Now someone doesn't sound happy to hear from his mother." She said in a mocking tone with her British accent making itself sorely evident.

David sighed tiredly, already physically exhausted from a call that had not lasted up to even thirty seconds.

"Why did you call?" He asked without beating about the bush.

"Can't a mother call to check on her son anymore?" She tsked and he imagined her shaking her head pathetically like she always did whenever she sounded like that.

He was fully aware what her reason was but a small part of him hoped that she was calling just to check up on him, only.

"I didn't say that mom." He rolled his eyes as he drawled his statement, apparently uninterested in the conversation.

"Oh well... I need some money David."

Aha! There it was. She never failed to dampen his hopes, never! The only reason why this woman ever called was for monetary assistance and whenever he refused, she would emotionally blackmail him into giving in.

"I sent you money just two weeks ago, what happened to all of that?" He questioned, a little bit aggravated at the fact that a huge sum could not last a month in his mother's care.

"I had to clear out some debts son, I'm sure you understand."

"Understand what?! Mom, I sent you five thousand dollars barely two weeks ago and now you're asking me for more?! What the hell do you take me for?" He found himself yelling before he knew it.

He felt a headache coming on and it was no thanks to this woman who kept increasing his stress levels coupled with all he had to go through on a daily basis.

"Shush boy, don't speak to your mother like that!" She scolded without delay.

"I'm not sending you anything. Have a nice day." He said and hung up before she could speak further.

He had his head on the desk the next second, breathing heavily.

"Ugh! I need to get out of here." He said with a groan while he picked up his car keys and suit jacket before heading out of the office, calling it a day.
