The music was breaking the awkward silence where the tension could've easily suffocate a person. Swallowing with an unknown difficulty, doing my best to not break the eye contact as this was the moment of truth - Who was going to break?

"I'm out!" Uncle Sam threw his cards with a characteristic whine, as predicted he was the first one to budge.

Daisy snorted and with a sly grin blew him a kiss. "Told you, no one can beat me."

Not too pleased with her comment he huffed, "Whatever." And went on to grab a snack from the kitchen.

Looking around the room, with confidence oozing from her every cell she snickered, "Now that the weakling is gone, who's next?"

"I'm in," Alexis placed her cards on the table, and damn those were good.

Exchanging quick glances with auntie Daisy, I tried to read her movements. Was she surprised, nervous? Did she have better cards?

"As always little bean trying to act tough, well too bad!" she placed her cards on the table and everyone groaned.

She won; I couldn't beat the set of Aces.

"I always win," she grinned happily, earning a judgmental glare from her wife who was trying to carry a serious conversation with my mum, while the rest of us played to our deaths. This family was always serious about the game nights - No mercy whatsoever.

"We seriously need someone new in the fam to beat her ass, this is getting ridiculous..." Sam commented, scrunched brows and judgmental tone indicating frustration.

Alexis puffed her cheeks, an odd habit I unconsciously picked up, as she began tossing the cards.

"Well, any potential lady?" Daisy teased her brother, knowing well that he had no one.

"It's okay Sammy," Alexis' angelic voice, directed towards the uncle. "You w-w-will find her, just s-s-stop trying so hard."

That made me wonder, Sam was a tall handsome blonde, maybe not the manliest, but handsome nevertheless. He's your quirky funny guy, that girls love to have around, but never date for some reason.

I believe it was because he paid attention to the wrong circle. I could easily imagine him with a calm maybe slightly nerdish woman, instead of those - no offense - dummies he tried to hit on at the bars.

"What about you little cutie, anyone asked you out yet?" Auntie's tone was suspicious, almost as if she were insinuating something, but I had no idea what.

"Yeah, today," I shrugged, wanting to erase it from my mind, as it caused an anxious twirl in my stomach.

I didn't want to lose him as a friend. Chris was the first person who accepted me at the new school.

"What?!" Alexis and Nessi who suddenly snapped away from her conversation with Isabel, have looked at me horrified.

Feeling their stares, Daisy whistled and added, "Marshall?" Her question caused my heart to drop.

"W-W..what?! No, of course not... Why would she?!" My voice cracked as I squeaked not expecting her name to pop up. But wait...

"Why would Marshall ask her out, stop being ridiculous," my mum was genuinely taken aback by auntie's rather questionable choice.

Alexis however went quiet, with a visible frown, which Daisy has noticed. Almost as if waiting for her reaction, rather than mine.

"No... It was Chris, my friend," I answered truthfully, but uncomfortably. "I don't think I want to date him, he's very nice, but I don't see him as anything else than a friend."
