"Do you know that winning competitions like this is quite easy? You need to study your opponents and watch their moves; You'd surely notice a slip-up. That's where you'd attack," Dunmininu said, and Gbemi felt like throwing something at him. She felt uneasy since she got picked to represent the school at the annual debate and essay competition in honor of Madam Olajumoke Badmus.
She has been excused from inter-house sports practice to prepare for the competition, and the cash prize is twenty million naira, which sounds like a lot to her. BHS has never participated in the quiz before, and the principal told her personally that she wants her to leave her mark and make Brixton High School a name they won't forget in a hurry.
"I don't think you know what you are saying shaa, look at this one. abeg don't stress me biko. See his mouth like attack them. Yen Yen Yen. Shut up, bro. Motivational speaker isonu," Gbemi replied, and he laughed. He knew she was under so much tension, and she felt like hitting his head with something hard.
"Babe, have you bought your queen things already, or have your parents sent money? So we can go together on Saturday?" Dunmininu asked, and She looked up from her notes and gave him the stink eye. He raised his hands in mock surrender before she went back to the dictionary she was searching. Dunmininu closed the book before pulling her closer. She groaned, but she let him pull her anyways. The letters were starting to look like Greek anyways.
They stayed there like that, Silence engulfing them, and no one bothered to say anything anymore; they just enjoyed the quiet in peace. Since they got back together, it has always been like this, and as if they are both scared of saying their mind. The usual saying, "if you ruin things, it would never be the same again," was very applicable.

Gbemi groaned at the next shop they entered, and Dunmininu winked at her; she didn't have the required energy to continue with him on this shopping spree. This place is a tad bit far from their house, and she hoped no one attends daddy's church here or sees her. She was given exeat to go home and shop for her queen things with Dunmininu and the rest of the girls. Dunmininu managed to convince her not to go home and come to his instead.
She thought about the idea, and she felt it made sense, plus her mom wouldn't get her the kind of gown she would like to wear as the queen of her house. She just called her mom and told her she was going to be entering the market herself. Hence, she sent money to get a simple gown and a list of warnings on how not to let any market woman cheat her. Her parents were away on a missionary event in Abuja, which alone made her feel confident enough to follow Dunmininu.
"Babe, what do you think of these T-shirt sets? Looks like something you would like?" Dunmininu asked, turning her attention away from her thoughts, and she looked at him. Her eyes darted to the price tag, and she swallowed. No way she was getting mere t-shirts for that ridiculous amount. She shook her head, and he groaned before he returned the shirts to their rack. He left the t-shirt rack, and he proceeded to the suit rack. Gbemi almost went down on her knees in praise, this was the third shop they were entering, and they've not bought anything. She should have listened to her intuition on not following him.
"Let's check out the next store; they sell prom dresses there. We'd get a pink gown for you and a white suit for me, finish." He said,, and Gbemi hissed. He made a U-Turn to meet her halfway, and he offered to carry her on his back, she rolled her eyes in response, and she didn't say anything. She just kept on following Dunmininu till they got to the store he was talking about. DreyMagix was the store's name, and Gbemi figured that he was affiliated with the owner.
He pushed the door open, and Gbemi entered after him; at this rate, she was going to burn out fast. Her feet were tired already, and she sat on the nearest couch without even waiting for anyone to offer her a seat. Dunmininu smiled apologetically at her before walking deeper inside the store. She relaxed before pulling out Dunmininu's phone from her bag; She tried to remember the password he told her.
"So you're the one who's turning my little cousin's head now? Nice," Someone said, and Gbemi looked up from her battle with the phone. She smiled awkwardly before ducking her head to greet the guy who looked too much like Dunminminu. The guy pulled her up and hugged her shortly before turning back to Dunmininu, and he said something in a language Gbemi had no idea of.
"So this goat here said you need something pink for your inter-house sports queen, and he needs a white suit. Let me show you the new pink prom royalty set that came in. it's the perfect size for you since you are a size 8. You might love it, but the suit is pink," He said before leading them to the inner room of the store. Gbemi saw the pink set before they even got closer, and she fell in love with it. It was perfect, and the gown was angelic.
"We will take it, guy." Dunmininu said, and Gbemi couldn't help but nod in agreement with him. She looked around for signs of a price tag, but she saw none, and she wondered if she would be able to afford it. Mom didn't give her beyond twenty thousand, and she was still going to buy shoes and a bouquet. She was about to say she didn't like it anymore and when they leave, she will go to a local market and get something cheaper. Before she could protest they were packing it already and Dunmininu said something to his cousin in that same foreign language. He escorted them to the car park and handed them the clothes, no one said anything and they just did the bro hug before they got in the car. Baba Ajiun, the old driver must have been used to waiting like this since he was Dunmininu's personal driver.
Gbemi rested her head close to the window and she closed her eyes to sleep, she felt Dunmininu pull her head towards his laps gently and he ran his hand through her hair softly as she zoomed off to Lala land. This was peace!
