Chapter 5

When he arrived at the second phase exam site Satotz had already begun explaining something again as a gate opened revealing a mansion, in front of which stood two people.

"Will all applicants who passed the First Phase enter? Welcome, I'm Menchi, the Second Phase examiner!", the girl with turquoise hair says.

"And I'm Buhara, the other examiner", says the other person whose stomach begins to growl, quite loudly, few seconds later.

"You must be pretty hungry", the girl says.

"I'm absolutely starving", the guy, Buhara says grinning.

"Great! That being said, the second phase of the Hunter Exam will be cooking!". Kalen twitches slightly, frowning. He has almost never cooked anything in his entire 16 year lifespan.

"Now let me explain the challenge. You must create a dish that will satisfy both Buhara's and my appetite using only the ingredients provided. Both Buhara and I are Gourmet Hunters which means this is our specialty!", Menchi explains. Hearing that they are Gourmet Hunters makes a few people chuckle.

"Your ingredients will include and kind of pork from the Bisma Forest. All the facilities will be provided for you", Buhara states.

"The exam will conclude when we've both eaten our fill, good luck!", Menchi adds.

Everyone, including Kalen, immediately ran towards the forest to look for some pigs. Though he had already decided that he may have to cheat a tiny bit and use his Nen.

Kalen followed the other applicants into the forest when he found Gon, Killua, Leorio and Kurapika sitting on the ground watching several huge pigs chew on bones. The pigs let out loud snorts from their abnormally large snouts, and started to chase them.

They were running quickly towards the other examinees so Kalen followed. When he got there, the pigs were busy hitting people, though no one seemed to have died yet.

It was such a pain to watch. He then started guiding one of the pigs away from the rest of the crowd. This was an easy task, so after completing it Kalen reached out his hand and activated his nen. He curled his fingers in, ever so slightly before the pig choked up some blood and fell to the ground lifeless.

Kalen didn't care how to properly kill the stupid pig. He just used the pig's own blood to strangle its organs. After getting the huge pig onto his back he quickly returned to the exam site, passing a few struggling applicants along the way.

He was the first to return out of all the applicants so he decided to wait and see what the others were going to do before starting. A short while later other applicants began to return, a few at a time, including Gon, Killua, Leorio and Kurapika.

Everyone mostly just roasted the pigs whole, so Kalen decided to make minor changes like seasoning it with some herbs and cutting it up before cooking it.

The first person to get judged seemed pretty confident but was turned down before Menchi even tried it. Buhara ate it happily while Menchi explained everything that was wrong with it. This happened many, many, times.

That wasn't good, Menchi was getting so pissed that she'd probably just fail everyone soon. With this thought he frowned. He had to go up soon.

Next Leorio went. He had put a small flag on his pig. Menchi got really mad and threw it at Buhara, who eats it. Gon goes up next with his pig decorated with flowers, but Menchi basically has the same reaction. Kurapika had made his pig into a pig-hamburger thing and this time Menchi actually tastes it.

"Yuck! Appearance is important but only if it also tastes good! You're no better than #403!", Menchi yells as she fails Kurapika.

"That was so much food I'm stuffed!", Buhara claims, while patting his stomach.

What? He hadn't even gone yet. His original plan was to forcefully use his nen to help him pass and now he was going to fail without even getting his stupid fucking pig judged. He really wanted to drown someone in their own blood right now. Take a guess who that someone is.

"Yeah, I'm also stuffed, therefore, no one passes. We're done here!", Menchi says before Kalen could even protest. Everyone is quite mad, but no one as mad as Kalen who was trying really, really hard to not reach for the knife he always kept in his belt.

The person who had his pig judged first, breaks a table and starts pouting and not accepting it. Honestly, Kalen felt the same but he didn't feel like making a fool of himself.

Menchi and the guy start yelling at each other but Menchi makes a valid point about what she said at the beginning.

"I said to prepare the pork in a manner we both found delicious, no one here made anything remotely delicious. You all just did the same thing, no one even attempted to emphasize the flavor. None of you even took this seriously!" Menchi lectures.

"But all pork dishes taste the same!", a bald ninja said, making Menchi even madder.

"Say that once more. Any more crap from you and I'll shove my arm up your ass and knock your teeth out! Don't you dare mess with me!" Menchi says, shaking the ninja in rage.

She finally lets the poor ninja go, and sits back down. The guy from before starts to protest again but Menchi shuts him up. So the guy runs to attack her but Buhara sends him flying with a punch before he even gets close.

"Buhara don't interfere", Menchi says after.

"If I hadn't you would've killed him, right?", Buhara answers.

"Probably, but let me clarify this, we frequently venture into the dens of ferocious beasts, searching for ingredients. Every hunter knows some form of martial art. You people lack focus and willingness to experiment. That alone disqualifies you from being hunters!", Menchi says while tossing knives around.

This speech manages to shut almost everyone up but it just got everyone, especially Kalen more ready to kill her.

At that moment, a voice in the sky diverted everybody's attention. There was an airship with the Hunters Association logo. A man jumped to the ground, creating a cloud of dust. After it settled, everyone could see an old man uninjured by the jump.
