Menchi reveals that this man is actually the chairman of the Selection Committee, Chairman Netero. Netero and Menchi begin to talk and she acknowledges her mistake. She attempts to resign as an examiner but Netero doesn't allow it. Instead he makes her come up with a new test for all examinees to participate in.

Menchi thinks for a moment before deciding that the new test will be boilings eggs. After making this decision she asks Netero if they can get a ride to Mt. Split-In-Half and he agrees. Their talk makes everyone more hopeful, including him.

They arrive rather quickly and Menchi explains the rules before jumping in to retrieve an egg. She quickly grabs an egg a flies back up using the wind. It seemed simple enough, but he already figured that the wind current probably wasn't there consistently.

But clearly others hadn't figured out the same thing, because several people immediately began jumping down to get an egg, though some chicken out. He also jumps, but grabs onto a thread to wait for the next wind current.

Gon tells everyone to wait for his signal since he can apparently smell it. A few idiots jump before Gon gives to signal and they die instantly.

Gon finally gives the signal, right before the threads snap, and everybody lets go of the threads. Everyone grabs and egg and flies back up using the wind current. Afterwards, the eggs are boiled in a big pot until they are ready to be eaten.

Kalen tries his and finds it to be surprisingly good. He doesn't deserve good things. So he immediately throws the egg in a trash can.

"Allow me to introduce myself to the remaining forty-two applicants. I'm Netero, the Chairman of this year's Hunter Exam Selection Committee!", Netero says, reintroducing himself on the airship after everyone had finished their eggs.

"And I'm his secretary, Bean", a little green thing said. It's name fit it's appearance really well.

"Originally, I had planned to make my appearance during the exams final phase but as I'm already here, I think I'll stick around for the rest of the trip. Haha", Netero says, laughing in a wholehearted way.

"We are scheduled to arrive at our destination tomorrow morning at 8 AM. You'll find dinner waiting in the dining hall. You are also welcome to get some rest. In other words, you're free to do as you please until you are contacted", Bean tells everyone.

8 AM? That was in... 10 hours or something? What the hell was he supposed to do with all that time?! He sighed, frowning again. Maybe he'd kill some of the other applicants? You know, lessen the competition. Or not. He didn't know.

"Hey, Gon! Let's explore the airship!", a familiar voice, probably Killua says to Gon.

"Yeah!", Got agrees and they both run off immediately.

Maybe he would just wander around aimlessly. It wasn't like he was going to have dinner, he wasn't hungry, despite not having eaten all day. And the day before that.

~•~

He was beginning to get bored because he had been wandering pointlessly for quite a while but he hadn't found anyone or anything worth his time yet. As he turned another corner he heard the same familiar voices from before, and of course, there was Gon and Killua.

They were talking about Killua's family, which was actually a pretty interesting topic. Considering that Killua was from the infamous Zoldyck family.

Just then Kalen sensed a familiar presence. It was Netero who was coming from the other side of the corridor. The old man seemed pretty interested in those two kids for whatever reason. He decided to stay and observe for the time being.

"Something wrong?", Netero asked the two kids before sensing Kalen from the other side.

"Um, Netero-san, did you see anyone coming from the other side?", Gon asks, pointing and clearly confused.

"Not before, but someone is there now", Netero responded. This makes Killua, who was almost positive that Netero was the only person there twitch slightly.

"Netero-san, it's not nice to ruin the surprise, don't you think?", Kalen says smiling in a sweet but slightly creepy way.

"You're pretty fast for an old man, and you're pretty good at hiding your presence for your age", Killua remarks.

"That little trick? I barely moved", Netero answers. His answer makes Killua frown a bit.

"Thank you, I'll take it as a compliment", Kalen says.

"What do you even want? You don't have to do anything until the last phase, correct?", Killua asked Netero with annoyance, completely forgetting about Kalen.

"No need to be so unkind. I was bored so I was looking for some companions. I also meant to ask you two, any thoughts on your first attempt at the Hunter Exam? Of course the black haired boy can answer as well", Netero says.

"It's fun! And there haven't been any of the written exams I was dreading", Got said smiling way too much for Kalen to be comfortable.

"I'm kind of disappointed, I expected the exam to be far more difficult. I'm guessing that the next phase will be more entertaining?", Killua says, but with far less excitement than Gon.

"I guess it just isn't as hard as I thought it would be", Kalen also answers.

"Anyways, Gon let's go!", Killua said obviously done talking to Netero. He, along with Kalen and Gon turned away to leave, but all three were stopped by Netero's next words.

"Would you all like to play a game with me?"
