Monday, the boys woke up early, taking turns taking a shower. They got dressed and packed up for school. They were in Helen's room, about to leave, before hearing 'knocking' on the window. They both looked at the window, then at each other. They looked confused.
"Who do you think is knocking on my window..?" Helen asked, staring at the closed curtains, a window behind the crimson, blood red curtains.
"I-I don't know.." Toby says, forgetting about the bird slamming against his bedroom's window a few weeks ago.
"I'll check," Helen said, "Hope I don't die."
"D-Don't d-d-d-d-die Helen!" Toby said, "Yo-You better n-n-not die.. I'll be a-a-alone ag-ag-again.." He frowned.
Helen smiled sadly at that, hoping it wasn't going to happen. "I'll try not to."
Helen approached the window, opening the curtains quickly. It was a bird slamming against the window. Now, Toby remembered. Helen opened the window, letting the bird in. The bird chirped in Helen's hands, before flying away.
"That's weird." Helen said. "I'll ask my parents about it."
"I-I thought th-th-they didn't c-care about y-y-you?" Toby asked, confused.
"Sometimes it seems like they do, sometimes it seems like they don't." Helen says, "My parents are just weird like that, I know. I can't even tell if they care about me or not."
"That's wh-what you c-c-call mixed feelings." Toby said, "W-Watch out f-f-for red flags."
"Speak for yourself Tobes." Helen said.
He hadn't realized that he gave Toby a nickname, which, Toby blushed a little, turning to Helen in confusion.
"Wha-?" Helen was about to ask before he realized it. "Oh crap."
Helen put his hands to his now tomato red face. He was a blushing mess. Helen calmed himself down before apologizing to Toby. Toby gladly accepted his apologies. After that was cleared up, they headed downstairs. Helen's parents were awake, having coffee.
"Good morning mom, good morning dad." Helen said.
"Morning boys." His father said.
"I wanna ask you something." Helen said.
Helen's father raised an eyebrow and Helen told them. "Earlier, a bird was slamming itself against my window. I wanted to know what that meant."
"So that's what the noise was earlier," Helen's father said, "I thought someone was banging on the door, so I went and checked, but there wasn't anyone there."
"It's a bad omen." Helen's mother said, "It means something bad's going to happen soon. Most likely death of someone close to you."
"Oh." Helen's father deadpanned, questioning life.
Helen and Toby looked at each other. Toby's head fell, looking on the ground, ticking and twitching every now and then. "Oh.. I see..." Helen said, "We'll be off now, thanks mom!"
"You're welcome, hun." Helen's mom smiled, waving them off.
They left the house and walked to school early at 5:45 AM. On the way, Toby still hasn't looked up even once.
"Toby..?" Helen asked.
Toby continued walking alongside Helen, completely out of his head. Helen put a hand on his shoulder, to which he flinched, looking up at Helen. "Wh-Wh-What..?" Toby stuttered, fear clear in his voice.
"Are you.." Helen asks, "..Okay..?"
Toby looks down again. "Yeah.."
"Anything on your mind?" Helen asks, smiling sadly to fit the mood.
"I.." Toby stutters, looking away from Helen. "I-I.. Heard a b-bird s-s-slam against m-my window a while a-a-ago.. A-And then..."
Toby tears up, both boys stopping. Helen opened his arm, motioning Toby to come and hug him. Toby starts sobbing and hugs Helen. Helen comforts Toby while they walk to school.Once they arrived, they got to school, they sat at their usual spot until homeroom.
"Y-Yeah.. Th-That h-happened.." Toby muttered, "Y-You know what I-I mean.." Toby says, trying not to think much about it and break down again.
"Yeah.." Helen said, looking away.
At the same time, they looked up, seeing a raven circling the sky. It was flying in circles and circles. Helen pulled out his phone, zooming in, then recording. The recording was exactly 4 minutes before a crow swooped by and circled with it. Then, after a total of 8 minutes, the birds flew away. Helen stopped recording then, showing Toby the recording.
"I-It's... A raven..?" Toby said, confused. "And then.. A-A crow?"
"Confusing, right?" Helen said, "It's probably another omen."
"Bad ones." Toby stated firmly. "W-Well.. M-Most likely.."
Helen nods. The bell rang. It was time for homeroom. They parted ways, waving each other off, heading to class.
...
Helen and Toby went home. Helen went to his mother, showing her the recording, asking her if it was another omen. She sighs, nodding.
"Although, it's strange," She says, "I've never heard of an omen of BOTH raven and crow flying in circles."
"Oh, what do you think it means?" Helen asked.
"Perhaps..." Helen's mother starts, "Perhaps it's a double omen."
"I guess that makes the most sense."
"I-I see wh-where you g-g-get you smarts from H-Helen." Toby says, smiling.
Helen blushed and Helen's mother chuckled. "Yup! He gets his looks from me as well!" Helen's mother said. Helen blushed even harder, "Mooommmm!!" Toby chuckled along with Helen's mother.
