Lisa leaned on the railing and stared at the scenic view from outside my apartment."If you like it that much I could give you a good deal." I joked as I watched her mesmerized by the view.
"And what's a good deal for you? A couple million dollars?" She asked while still staring at the buildings ahead and I had to laugh.
"Hey, I have something for you." I told her.
Following me back inside, she froze for a moment and then turned to give me a weird look.
"You felt the need to?" She asked.
"You asked for it." I said with a shrug and took a sit on the couch as I watched her lean down and tuck her hair behind one ear.
"I remember taking it back," chuckling, I leaned down next to her.
"Is it the color of the fur? I can have it changed to a little off white if the maintenance cost is a bit too high for you."
"You really have to make it sting?" Scooping the little puppy off the floor she rose her eyebrow at me.
"I was just kidding. All I want is joint custody."
"Get your own dog."
"Funny story, she's actually mine. I have a dog at my parents' place and she gave birth a few weeks ago. When you asked, I decided to get one of the puppies for you." I worked around the kitchen to get the dog treats I'd bought earlier.
"Thanks," she said while raising the puppy in her arms and squinting her eyes at her. I smiled as I watched her. "But you do know this reminds me that someone broke up with me right?"
"Someone? So you're not going to say his name?"
"Try being the bitch who got dumped because she can't treat her guy right," she said focusing her effort on making the puppy follow her head movements while still squinting her eyes.
"Here," I said handing her some dog treats and taking the puppy from her. "You're being a little hard on yourself."
"It really hurts and maybe it doesn't seem like it but I really cared about him. I even told him about the other night and he said he understood. He was okay with everything until last minute when he wasn't. " I watched as she tried to hide her tears and I pursed my lips, unable to say anything at the moment.
"If it helps I shouldn't have taken you on a date while you were still with him."
My bad.
"It doesn't help. " she said with a huff and held out the treat to the puppy in my hands who was more than happy to snatch it from her. "Why did you even take me on a date?" Her agitation sipped right through her words as she took a seat on the couch and buried her head in her hands.
"If I were to be honest with you I'd sound a little messed up." I told her.
I hated it in books or movies where the guy always had a clever thought to get himself out of saying he liked the girl because of the gestures he'd shown.
For one, men didn't think everything through like movies and books dictated and two, if a man liked a woman, he hardly had any time to think and instead rushed to act on impulse to please the woman in question.
Revelance of those thoughts to this situation, maybe none but I wanted to say it so that it was out there.
"Hit me," she said looking at me and I set the puppy down who ran to the pile of pillows she had been sleeping on earlier.
