Four words:Dave was ignoring me.
Ever since the kiss he hadn't been around for a talk or a reaction and I was getting fed up.
Well, okay, it was one thing to regret his actions and words but it was a whole different story for him to even avoid coming home so that we wouldn't run into each other.
Today was the fourth day after the kiss and it was also new year's eve, which for some reasons had spiked a new type of attitude I didn't know I had until today.
"Hey, Essie?" I called into the kitchen as I walked in to spot the old lady leaned over the kitchen sink, scrubbing at something on the other end. "Did Dave come in yesterday?"
"Oh, hey ma'am?" The lady beamed at me tiredly and I stopped in my tracks, didn't she get holidays off? "-room,"
"Huh?"
"He's just arrived a while ago. He went to his room to change." She told me before leaning back over the sink.
"Okay, thanks." Watching as the lady continued her chores, I swallowed the big lump in my throat and turned to head off towards his bedroom.
We had to do this at some point, right?
I let my hand knock softly on the door before calling out, "Dave? Can we talk?"
No word came from the other side and I remained standing there for a while.
When it was evident no response would be given from the other side, I decided to knock again. "This won't take much of your time," I informed yet was once again met by silence.
Deciding it was best if I just left, I sighed and walked back to the kitchen with a heavy and shrunken heart.
Couldn't we just talk about it?
"Hey Essie, I'm sorry to bother but could you help me pack up in the evening?"
"You're leaving?" Dave's voice made me freeze as he walked from behind me into the kitchen.
Deciding whether to be petty or just play the big girl part, I played with my lip before sighing and nodding with a silent "yeah."
"To your apartment?"
Oh, so now he wanted to talk?
"Yeah," I replied once again before leaving the kitchen.
"Hey wait," I heard him call behind me but I ignored him.
Poor little thing Essie was since she had no choice but to witness the drama.
Walking into my room, I sat on the bed and made a mental checklist of all my belongings before the door cracked open.
"Are you sure about leaving?" Dave asked as he walked into the room looking unsure of himself.
"Yeah," I heard him suck in a breathe before he bit down on his lip and eyed me silently.
"That's all you're gonna say to me?"
He was lucky I was making the effort to open my mouth.
"Yeah," I replied pointedly and he closed his eyes.
"Don't be like that, " he scolded weakly and I rose my eyebrow before standing up.
"Mmh," I replied and headed for the bathroom only for him to block the door.
"I'm sorry," he said quietly and I nodded, not really sure what to say. "I mean it." He reached for my cheek only for me to pull away and glare at him.
"Don't!" I warned and stepped away from him, "I don't want you ignoring me for the rest of my life," I mumbled the last part and walked over to the closet only so that I could create some distance.
"You don't have to leave," he told me quietly.
"Yeah, well, I dont feel the need to stay," I mumbled again and turned to him, "it's alright, I was gonna leave next week anyway."
"We haven't talked about this," he caught himself just a second away from yelling at me from what seemed like frustration.
Deciding to remain calm, I hugged my hands close to my chest and pulled out my lower lip before pulling it back in, "I was going to tell you that when I knocked on your door," I told him, "I'm planning to head out of town next week."
"We-"
"I was gonna tell you but you were avoiding me." I cut him short pointedly.
"You can head out of town and then come back here," he offered carefully and I shook my head.
"You've already offered me enough help Dave, I'm grateful really but I have to leave eventually. "
"You're doing this on purpose!" He accused coldly and in a low tone and my eyes narrowed and tried to figure his words out. "You know I like you and you're trying to rile me up because of what I did. "
"I don't know if you like me," I replied calmly and walked to my bed, "I mean yeah you told me so but your actions say otherwise. I mean all I have for proof is a kiss that got you ignoring me for almost a week." As much as I tried to seem indifferent, the words were hitting me right at the back of my gut but I tried my best to swallow the horrible lumps.
"Have a safe trip," he eyed me and I gave him a small smile despite the painful blow that hit me on the chest when his words came out loud.
"Thank you," I replied, eyes on his as he turned to leave.
"Take one of the cars with you."
"I'll be fine but thanks for the offer."
"Happy new year."
"You too."
And he stood there for a long second as he eyed me, eyes contemplating whether to leave or not.
Eventually, his urge to stay away from me won and he left me eyeing the door.
