Recovering from a transplant wasn't the easiest of tasks especially if you didn't like to lay around on bed and have people tend to you.It had been roughly two weeks after my kidney transplant had gone through and merely a month since Lisa and I shared a hospital bed.
Her father had whisked her away to Italy after her finals to spend quality time with a cousin from his side that had given birth.
A part of me was happy that she wasn't around by the time I'd gotten around to the surgery because I wouldn't feel elated to have her always fussing over me and my recovery, but the other part was butt hurt because of how much I'd missed her.
Harris had been around a couple of times, limited by the responsibilities he had to assume due to my absentia in the company. He seemed to be doing fine but sometimes, whenever the question about Lisa's whereabouts arose, he seemed distanced and closed off, like the most pain from it emanated from the fact that he had to ask me about it and not the other way round.
One of my nurses had just left my room and I lay with my back facing the door as I tried to silently will the throbbing pain on my left side to go away.
I had foolishly assumed the healing process of the wound and set myself out to lift a few heavy, yet seemingly light, boxes around the house which had resulted to a quick yet painful overnight stay at the hospital.
Now I was almost literally chained to my bed with nothing to do to get my mind off my sweet little woman who had very stubbornly refused to tell me when she'd be back from Italy.
When the door opened, I readily assumed that it was Essie bringing by my morning meal, so I didn't turn from my position.
The door closed gently and silent footsteps approached the side of the bed.
When they stopped, I turned around and froze in surprise when a brown gaze and sweetly spread smile greeted me.
"Hey?" I whispered gently just in case my mind was playing tricks on me.
"Hi?" She said with the smile still in place. "Miss me?"
Nodding, I completely turned and slowly pulled myself up, careful not to pop anything with all the pain plaguing me.
"C'mere," I called gently and she made her way to me, carefully sitting by my side.
"Your mom told me you popped something, had to be rushed to the hospital last night." The bite in her tone was not guised by anything, yet the concern was unmistakable.
"I was planning on arranging your library yesterday," I told her, "I didn't think the boxes would cause any harm."
"I don't know what to say to you," she sighed before hugging me, "I was so worried."
Tightening my arms around her, I kissed the side of her head and pressed my nose to her head, breathing her in after a long month.
"How has my baby been?" I asked after a moment.
"Couldn't stop worrying about you." She said, "my dad said hi, he'll visit once he gets back."
"You guys didn't fly together?"
"He helped me book an emergency flight after your mother's call. He is still stuck in Italy with family."
"I'm sorry for breaking you away," I apologised sincerely. She had only started to get a hold of her estranged family, I didn't want to be part of the reason she didn't get the chance to know them.
"It's not your fault, I wanted to be here. I've missed you so much." She whispered the last part like she could not bare to say it out loud. "I'm camping here for as long as I want." She said after a moment.
"You won't hear me complain." I told her.
Playing with my fingers, she turned her warm gaze towards me and smiled. "I wouldn't last in a long distance relationship," when I rose an eyebrow, she chuckled softly, "I called your mom immediately after I couldn't reach you. I was speculating so many scenarios yet I didn't think you'd be in hospital barely a week or two after your surgery. I thought you were smart enough not to do anything stupid while you were recovering. "
"Well, I couldn't stop thinking about you and I wanted to do something nice before you came back so I decided to make you a library." I told her quietly.
"I'll help with the library once you get better, " she promised before standing up, making me miss the warmth she'd withdrawn by moving away. "Essie told me you haven't had anything this morning, I'm going to get you your breakfast."
Her quick departure made me smile, she was sometimes one of the purest person I'd met in a long while. Things like rain and puppies made her delighted and brought her joy while seeing a sad movie or documentary made her tear up.
She paid close attention to details that would otherwise go unnoticed by others, like she could easily tell when one was anxious or excited by just looking at their body language. She could easily tell what a stranger was about to do by just looking at them without any conversation and it made me laugh out in surprise everytime her predictions came true.
Grace had once sited that she was easily impressed by little things like a stranger's complement and it was very sweet that she laughed at the silliest things.
Grace had gotten closer to her during our Facetimes and she loved to crash most of them when she was around to visit me.
It had been a while since she'd came to visit because she had a project in Puerto Rico but made sure to bombard me with as many calls as she could.
Lisa came back with a bowl of steaming hot soup, a basket of bread and a glass of what looked like warm milk.
When she set it on the nightstand, I groaned and tried to sink into the mattress only to have her glare at me.
"Should I read the list of drugs that you have to take after this?" Her risen eyebrow made me sit up and drag the tray of food on my lap.
"I'll go get my own meal, I seem to have worked up an appetite after the flight." She said with a little jump as she skipped out of the room making me smile fondly after her.
Hell did I love this woman!
