Hero?

I heard a steady beeping sound. I attempted to open my eyes, but they won’t work. I try to speak, but I cannot find my voice. I try to do something to show I was awake, but I was so numb, I couldn’t tell if I moved.

“She moved!” I hear a doctor yell.

“Honey, can you hear me?” Felix’s comforting voice called.

“F-fel-felix?” I was able to softly say. It was barely audible, but heard nonetheless.

“Yea baby, I'm here.” I felt small drops of tears fall onto my hand. Once those tears fell, I worked twice as hard to try and regain my strength. My eyes slowly opened. I saw that I was laying on a hospital bed and Felix leaning over me, looking as if he hasn’t moved for days. I reached up my shaky hand and cupped his cheek. As it started to slip, Felix secured it in place with his own hand.

“You shouldn’t have done that (Y/N). I should be laying here, not you.”

“Felix,” my voice sounding stronger than before. “Just like the day we met, I don’t regret saving you.” I smiled at him as he turned to the doctor.

“Is she going to be okay?”

“She is lucky to be alive. The bullet hit her spinal cord. There is a very probable chance she may be paralyzed. However, there was a recent breakthrough in London where after olfactory ensheathing cells were placed in the spinal cord, a man was able to walk again after paralysis.”

“Wh-what would this process entail?”

“We will need to remove an olfactory bulb-”

“Hold on, the what?” Felix asked.

“An olfactory bulb is associated with ones sense of smell. Each person has two located in the top of the nose to assist with a persons’ sense of smell.”

“So, she could walk again?”

“Given the proper conditions, yes. We will have to run more tests to see if it is safe to perform the surgery on her.”

“Thank you doctor.” I said faintly.

“You are welcome; now, there are a few police officers that would like to talk to you.”

“Okay, thanks again.” Felix said. The police officers entered and talked to us. I told them I didn’t want to press charges, because I felt that I wouldn’t be able to withstand going to court to testify because, she used to be an idol of mine, and no matter what has happened, her Marzipans needed her on YouTube, not behind bars. Once we were done talking to the officers, the doctor came back in.

“Mrs. Kjellberg, are you aware that you only have one, barely functional olfactory bulb?”

“Actually, no.”

“I am sorry to say this, but the procedure will not work with an olfactory bulb in such a damaged condition.”
