The sacrifice (Chapter 12)

Mercy hospital stood tall towering over what was left of the friend group. Socks' brown eye was almost completely yellow and he was getting super frustrated at the smallest things. His claws had also grown sharper. His feet were also getting the same treatment as the hands but one was mutating faster than the other so he had taken off one of his rainbow colored Socks. He also had somewhat of a difficult time speaking.

"Just hold on Socks, we're almost there." Meme had tried to reassure him. Socks just glared at him through narrow eyes like he didn't trust one of his closest friends. He gave the same treatment to everyone else. Mercy hospital was tall and had many corridors. They kept running into CEDA infected who were immune to fire which it wasn't like they had much of that to spare. The place looked like missiles had hit it. Especially one of the higher floors. Socks had kept quiet and when he spoke it was mangled and hard to understand. Sometimes Meme would talk to Laff and say something about a dead friend and Socks would look confused as if he didn't know who they were. As they turned down the corridor Meme saw an elevator at the end of the hall.

"Ally Elevator!" he shouted over his shoulder. Ally came walking over and saw the elevator.
"Guys! Elevator!" She yelled Oompa and Laff came walking over Muffin and Nadwe were practically bouncing up and down but Socks hung back a bit. "Socks you coming?" she asked him he looked at her confused then pointed to himself. Blaza walked up behind him and turned to look at him.
"You coming Socks?" He asked. Socks' eyes just widened more in confusion . Finally in his best attempt at words he asked.
"Who is Socks?" Meme felt his chest break. Socks didn't even know who he was. They were out of time. At least he could still speak and wasn't attack him. His skin was a lot paler and he looked skinnier than normal. Meme walked over and grabbed his hand. Socks just stumbled along after Meme.
"Have you been eating at all?" he asked Socks looked at him like he asked; 'how many children have you deep-fried?' (Thanks jarrott) Socks shook his head and Meme pressed the elevator button a scream rewarding them.

"How does that summon a horde?" Muffin asked disbelief in his tone.

"I don't know." Meme responded. Fighting the horde in close quarters was easy since their back was to the elevator. As soon as it opened they all ran inside and Ally smacked the button for the top floor. It stopped a level down.

"I wonder why it stopped?" She wondered aloud, staring at the elevator buttons.
"Remember when there was that robbery and the top of Mercy hospital got blown up? Probably that. They were able to finish the top top floor but not the floor underneath. Which was the floor we wanted to be at." Laff explained.

"How did you know that?" Meme aske, surprised.

"Cause I was here when it happened." Laff said, shrugging it off like it was nothing. They walked down the long hallway making their way to the stairwell that would hopefully lead them to the roof. Socks sticking in the back with Muffin and Nadwe. Who were warry of the fact that Socks could snap at any second.
"Stairs blocked." Ally sighed.

"What are we gonna do about that?" Laff asked. Meme felt worried then all of a sudden there was a bang and they all spun around to see Muffin guilty standing next to a broken vent in the wall.

"Um- I made a way- it's not like an actual vent it's just a hole in the wall." Muffin said as he crawled through. Meme followed and he helped the rest of the group in Muffin ran ahead and got to the ladder. "Guys up here!" he shouted as he started climbing up. A few seconds later what sounded like a charge yell and Muffin scream. Meme turned around to see Muffin getting charged off the floor above and down the elevator shaft screaming. There was no helping him now.
"MUFFIN!" Nadwe screamed terror in his voice. Laff tried to grab Muffin as he flew past but he missed by an inch. Soon they heard what sounded like cracking bones that echoed up. Nadwe let out a sob. "HE'S DEAD!" Nadwe yelled with pain and sorrow in his voice.
"We need to keep moving, we can't lose anyone else." Meme tried to comfort Nadwe. Who let out a sob. They made it to the top roof and there was a radio that sat inside a building that Meme went to go check out.
"Mercy hospital, is there anyone there?" The voice asked. Meme instantly picked it up and talked into the microphone.

"Hi! We have 7 people here!" meme shouted into the mic. Socks spun around and did his best to defend the rest of the group inside.

"I'll be there in 5 minutes." The pilot told them. Ally smiled and clapped.
"We'll be getting a cure for you soon." She tried to tell Socks who shrugged and nodded. They stationed themselves on the roof of the building that had the microphone. Throwing pipe bombs and other throwables. The helicopter hovered around. They heard the speaker with the pilots voice say.

"HURRY GET OVER TO THE HELIPAD!" they all started running towards his Socks running ahead. There was a tank on the helipad Ally slipped past it with Nadwe trailing behind. Laff leaped up on the plane and grabbed them both helping them on. Oompa looked the tank in the eyes.
"IM NOT AFRAID OF YOU!" he shouted the tank swung its large fist swatting Oompa away like a fly he flew into a wall and Socks heard his skull crack. Meme was a little behind and both Socks and Blaza stood on the edge of the platform. Meme was getting too close to the tank for Socks comfort. His brain couldn't really understand what was happening but he clenched his fist.

"Go." he told Blaza who looked at him.

"Why?" Blaza asked.

"GO!" he shouted again Blaza started running.

Meme felt something hit and he went flying back. He was close to the edge of the roof. No one, not even any special infected could survive the fall. One more hit from the tank and he would be dead. He felt fear flutter up in his chest and he looked up at the sky. All over He thought, closing his eyes and waiting for impact. He heard a loud screech and opened his eyes seeing Socks standing right across from the tank. Small and crouched down. He ran forward and tackled the tank head first. Knocking the tank off the roof. Socks going with it. Socks let out a scream of fear and Meme ran over to see him falling off the building into the darkness. His eyes wide and open watching as his friend fell to his death.

"Socks-" Meme started. He felt someone grab his shoulder and pull him to the helicopter. Taking him away from the building.

"He sacrificed himself for me.."

Socks lay in a crumbled mess at the bottom of the 40 story hospital building. How he was still alive, Socks didn't know. He wouldn't be for much longer. His bones were broken in every place. The tank had already died. Socks breathed in and closed his eyes. He opened them to see his Mother and father with his two youngest siblings and he ran to them.

"How are you guys here?" he asked. Fully able to speak now. He didn't get an answer but a hug from his little brother and Sister. He accepted that as an answer and felt himself fade away.
