THINGS WERE NOT LIKE THEY USED TO BE ANYMORE. That much was very clear. Once, the world thought that Anya had left the plane of the living but that couldn't have been more untrue. After she destroyed the skiff, leaving Kirigan to be eaten by volcra in the fold, everybody thought that that was it. That it was finally over. But history always finds a way to repeat itself.
On the run, the raven-haired, Alina and Mal went into hiding, keeping their identities and their powers hidden as they started anew in a foreign land. In an effort to survive, the trio finds themselves on the ship of a mysterious privateer, one that seems all too familiar.
Hunted by their enemies, the Oryalen woman and the crew discover that the general has gained a dangerous, new and terrifying power, all in a league of its one. But he might not be the only one. The shadow summoner needs to be defeated before the world falls at his hands and so they seek another legendary amplifier made by Morozova. Although pieces of it and finding the creature might be closer then they think.
Old paths cross when the crows return in unexpected ways, some even more than others, and another opportunity for a job arises. Realizing that the inferni, the Starkov woman and the rest of the crows have a common goal once more, Kaz and Anya fight their way through however they can.
Larger things are at play when Anya finds herself back at the little palace, admits cults and traitors, leading the second army with Alina. Vows for revenge were made, words of promise were broken. One thing is for certain. There is no time to die.
