I made my way over to the two girls dancing and when they noticed my approaching, they grabbed both my arms and embraced me in their dance. The music flooded my ears as Sarah, Kie, and I jumped along to the songs. My throat felt like a desert and my vocal chords were strained from singing my lungs out— my cheeks grew sore from smiling too much but I didn't care. I was having so much fun and I prayed that the night would never end. Eventually I excused myself from all the fun so my feet could take a break from the pressure weighing on my ankles.
I wandered over to the bar to grab a drink of bottled water before placing myself on a set of stairs that was out of the way of the party. From my view I could still see Kie and Sarah dancing the night away and I couldn't help but shake my head in awe— I don't understand how their feet weren't screaming at them to give them a break. The condensation from the cold bottle ran down my arm as I took a big swig of water, it raced down my throat and soothed its ache.
I suddenly felt a shift in the atmosphere as someone sat down next to me. I could smell the alcohol on his breath as Topper asked, "Hey Andy, mind if you sit here?"
I sort of laughed at his manner because he was completely wasted. His hair was slightly ruffled and he was swaying back and forth, using his hands to steady his weight. I bit my lip, trying to hide my amusement "Yeah sure Topper, how has your night been?"
"Its been good but..." He started. I looked back to the party and my attention was turned to another figure moving in the crowd— I recognized that blonde hair anywhere. Topper's rant became white noise as I tuned him out to focus on JJ suspicious actions. He was wearing a suit, obviously trying to blend in with the kooks, but his movements were precise and planned— anyone watching could tell he had a goal in mind. My eyes squinted in confusion as I saw him approach the kook princess herself, Sarah Cameron.
Her attention turned toward him very quickly and they swayed together for a minute but it looked like they were whispering to each other— it was odd because even though the song was upbeat, their expressions stayed serious. My head tilted in curiosity as I watched Sarah hand something small and shiny discreetly into JJ's hand. It was barely noticeable to the naked eye, I only saw it because I was watching them intently— it was some sort of weird secret exchange. The blonde slipped the unknown object into his pocket and started to dance away from Sarah--clearly trying to leave.
That whole thing was so suspicious and curiosity was itching inside of me, begging me to understand what just happened. Unfortunately for JJ, his escape plan was interrupted as I spotted Rafe and his goons making a b-line directly towards him. A spark of fear lit up in his eyes as he changed his direction of exit— fortunately for me, he was coming my way. I abruptly stood up and brushed the dust off my baby blue jumpsuit as a brilliant plan formed in my head.
"Hey hey Andy where are you going, I was in the middle of my story" Topper winned at me. To be honest I forgot that he was there and I genuinely did feel bad about getting up in the middle of his speech— but i only had one chance to see my plan through and it was a small window
"Sorry Top, I'll be right back" I answered briskly and walked away.
JJ was pushing through the crowd, some of the older members of the party were glaring at him with disapproving or angry looks. His pace panicked, with each step he became more desperate. The boy was too distracted by the kooks that were taunting and following him with intimidation— as a result, he was bumping into many bystanders. I could hear my heartbeat accelerate as I quickly ushered towards the alarmed blonde . When he was close enough I placed myself in his direct line of action. JJ's eyes were nervously placed on the tall figures approaching him, so I took the opportunity to ram my body into his dramatically.
"Oh my god JJ! I am so sorry I didn't see you there!" I announced as I placed my hands on his arms, pretending to be shocked and caught off guard. It's safe to say my acting skills were not top tear but with all the adrenaline racing through his body, I doubt JJ noticed. He caught himself, grabbing my biceps tightly— a pulse of electricity raced through my body as I felt his ice cold rings dig into my skin, I could practically feel his nerves radiating.
Without letting go he spun me around, making us swapping spots. I suspect he did that on purpose, using me as an obstacle for Rafe and his goons to get around. "Uhhhhh its ok" JJ quickly stated, panic laced in his voice. As he did this, I slipped my hand into his pocket, praying he wouldn't catch me, and grasped the mysterious object Sarah gave him only moments before. He let out a ridgid breath before taking a look over my head, immediately his eyes widened in terror.
Within a second, I was left in his dust. I felt the breeze of the kooks rush past me— some of them pushed but I stood like a stone statue, watching them chase after the blonde until they disappeared from my view. I let out the breath I was unaware holding in and smiled to myself. I couldn't believe that actually worked. My hands were shaking from the adrenaline and I slowly looked down, unclenching my grip around the object. My eyes widened and my mouth fell open as my brain comprehended what was in the palm of my hand. A key, but not just any key— a key with a wheat symbol carved into it.
