I caught a glimpse of my mom at the bar with one of her clients. She was leaning in and talking about god knows what, and this poor sucker was consumed by her every word. I rolled my eyes and laughed to myself, sometimes men are so easily enchanted by women— it is very funny. I strutted to the dancefloor, it was pretty busy now and this made me a bit nervous— I didn't recognize anyone I could talk to. An uncomfortable tightness sprung through my chest and my stomach was fluttering with nervousness. It's like the heavens were listening to my prayers and my social awkwardness was spared when a couple people from school called me over to them.
Time seemed to fly as the night went on, me and that group spent a long time dancing and singing along to some of the upbeat songs the DJ was playing. But with time came more drunk older kooks who requested a more mellow playlist. Since those members of the club were paying his bills, the DJ had to oblige but I could see the boredom on his face as he played slow songs.
One of the girls in the group grabbed me and we were twirling each other during the first song. We gripped each other's hands and copied the other people swaying peacefully around us. I tried to hide my amusement but when I looked her in the eyes we both burst out laughing— causing the other members to glare at us. For the rest of the song we tried to remain as quiet as possible but it was hard not to scoff at the people who were actually trying to enjoy the romantic dance.
Just as quickly as it started the waltz was over. My friend and I sarcastically bowed to each other, snickering as we did so, and I departed from the floor to relieve myself of my thirst quenched throat. So naturally I walked up to one of the waiters holding a tray of the bubbly liquid I craved, and snatched it while giving him a flirtatious wink. The next dance had just started so I thought it was probably not too late to find a partner. I quickly downed the champagne and reached my hand to my mouth to suppress a cough— with my other hand I set the empty glass on a vacant table. My feet stomped on the wooden floor, a little too aggressively, as I navigated through the lovey-dovey crowd to try and find the group I had just left.
In my peripheral vision I saw a figure marching towards me but a hand hooked onto mine before I got the chance to turn. A firm arm wrapped around my waist as I was turned around by none other than the kook king himself. I gasped instinctively and tried to back away but he gripped me harder. "God Rafe can you not be a creep for 2.5 seconds" I sneered with disgust
I struggled a bit more but he remained firm and unmoving, his stare was over my head which made me feel uneasy. I looked up at him and he held a blank expression which made my mouth twist into a timid frown. I began to sweat as I tried to desperately force my wrist away but he firmly restrained it. Without moving his head, he looked down at me with an infuriated sulk. Rafe then muttered "What am I to you Andy? Huh?!" He said that last part so coldly a shiver was sent down my spine. I couldn't help but shrink in the wake of his temper, "Am I just someone you laugh at, am I a joke to you?Because I am not someone to be messed with...ok!"
I cowarded at his words because I was guilty— guilty of withholding the object of his desire but I did not know if his outrage had anything to do with that. Am I dumb, what else could it be about?! I decided it was in my best interest to lie, I couldn't just come clean without knowing what he was upset about. I tried to hide the quiver in my voice as I attempted to avoid his penetrating gaze, "what are you talking about?" I nervously questioned
I whimpered in pain as he tightened his grip on my waist and hand. No one around us noticed the hostile conversation that was happening, to an outside eye we just looked like two teenagers slow dancing at Midsomers. Rafe rolled his eyes and crooked his neck so his face would be closer to mine. I moved mine back apprehensively and my eyebrows arched in horror. He scoffed "Do you find me stupid...hmmmmm? Kelce saw you talking with that pogue and holding MY key!" He then cleared his throat to ease his anger and also to calm his voice. With every word he spoke, his volume increased and the members around us started to notice. He looked back down at me, the psycho inside seemed to be soothed by a deep breath, "Give it to me now" He voice was like a low hum "nothing bad will happen to you if you give it to me right now"
Ummmm hello, did he just openly threaten me? Oh and lucky me, he still thought that I had the key even though I didn't. I bet Kelce didn't notice the part where JJ snatched it from my hands while he was spying on our conversation. Goddamn it, he must have been the one that made the twig snap! I knew I should have followed my gut and known someone was watching JJ and I, god I was so stupid!
The song that had encaged me seemed like it had lasted years but it finally ended. An escape plan quickly formed in my head as I predicted the approaching future of the crowd. Chaos on the floor broke out as all the people were attempting to find new partners, fortunately I took the opportunity that the universe handed me. Rafe obviously didn't expect this lawless floor to be swarmed by more kooks— he looked around in shock and for a split second his grip loosened. I madly ripped myself from his intimidating arms and bolted into the crowd. I used the desperate people wandering around the floor as a cloak of invisibility and I never looked back. Unfortunately my camouflage was spoiled as the next song began and peace was attained once again.
My eyes widened as I witnessed Rafe charging at me, using his hands to aggressively push past pedestrians in his path— Again, I had now known how JJ felt hours before when the kooks were chasing after him. And I did the only thing a wise person would do in my situation— I fucking ran.
