The corners of my mouth pulled towards the sky but I quickly tried to suppress the laugh that was creeping up my throat. I rolled my eyes and scoffed, "Gold? Yeah right"
My shoulder dipped as well as my hip, my whole body radiated disbelief. What are we, the Goonies? No, this is the Outer Banks there is no way that he is telling the truth. My skepticism seemed to annoy him because he grabbed my biceps and jerked me to now face him. I choked on my amusement as he gripped my skin tightly and shook me somewhat, attempting to emphasize his seriousness, "Andy I'm dead serious ok? I swear on my life. Just ask Kie and you'll see"
I breathed out heavily and stared down at my shoes. I needed a break from the intensity of his stare— it was plastered in sincerity but I still had trouble believing him. JJ was good at deceiving I guess, but it is kinda obvious when he is lying. This story is too unbelievable to be made up plus if he was lying, gold wouldn't be the first object to come to mind, right? He let go of my arms and backed away, making his way towards the stairs, "Listen I gotta go now but don't tell anyone about this ok? He pointed at me when he said this and gave me a wink
I lifted my chin and half-heartedly smiled. I then nodded my head in agreement and watched the blonde pogue disappear into the night. The music of the party now became apparent, humming lightly in my ears. I could still hear JJ's footprints running through the sand, the crunching sound decreased as he traveled a further distance-- but then I heard a crack of a twig. I whipped my head in the direction of the sound and squinted my eyes but I didn't see anything so I just shrugged.
I intended to do what the blonde had asked of me, to keep the pogues secret. Now that I knew why Kie was being weird about the whole situation I wanted to talk to her. I slowly made my way towards the distant lights and took in a deep breath of the sticky air. Both JJ and I felt secure in our private conversation but little did we know someone was watching.
When I got back to the party, I thought that I would have to search for Kiara, but instead she found me. I was scanning the crowds for her as I felt a tap on my shoulder and when I whirled around she was standing there. She placed her hand on my shoulder with a powerless grasp "Andy," she slurred. Oh god, how many more champagne glasses did she put down when I was gone? Her breath sparkled with hints of the kook cocktails she slurped down "JJ texted me and he told me that you know" She lazily put her hand up to her mouth, like she was shielding it from the other people standing by us "about the key"
I could tell she was attempting to whisper but anyone in a 6 feet radius could hear her. My eyes magnified and I frantically glanced around to see if anyone had overheard her. Thankfully no one did, or anyone that mattered anyway. She was giggling at my reaction and I suddenly felt the panic JJ did only minutes before, except he had to deal with an annoying bitch and I had to deal with a very drunk girl. I slammed my hand over her mouth and furrowed my eyebrows together "Shhhhhhh" I told her urgently.
This only caused her to laugh more— I just rolled my eyes. She weakly pulled on my wrist to release her silenced tongue. She chuckled "you're right, you're right!" Kie patted my shoulder lightly before accidentally stumbling back. I reached out to try to help but she caught herself before any damage was done. She narrowed her eyes sarcastically and pointed at me lazily "You, come to my house later for a sleepover and Sarah and i will explain everything" Kie then grabbed my wrist and marched towards an unknown destination, still tripping over her own feet "come on, come on" she drunkenly beckoned me.
I didn't realize she was leading me to the exit until halfway through our path. I planted my feet in the grass firmly and she whirled around looking annoyed at me. She twisted her face into a frown and stared at me with confusion, "I can't go right now Kie" I clearly stated, talking to her like a adult talks to a child, "I can't leave my mom, I need to wait for her"
She crossed her arms and stomped her one foot into the ground, when she was drunk she acted like a toddler throwing a tantrum. A laugh crept up but I covered it up with a cough "Why!" she pouted "we need to meet with the rest of the gang"
I was taken back by this— my face softened as I realized that I was now part of the "gang". It made me feel wanted, like I had friends that actually trusted me with their plot— of course they still needed to explain some details to me but whatever. I smiled and rolled my eyes "I know, but I promise I will meet up with y'all later!"
She pursed her lips together, still sassily crossing her arms, and looked up at me with doe eyes "Promise?" she then proceeded to lift up her pinky finger at me. It was kind of funny, but I suppressed my giggle to emphasize my vow.
I then linked my finger with her to confirm our pact. I looked at her dead in the eyes and responded "I promise" This seemed to satisfy her so she smiled with confidence. I was overflowing with euphoria as I saw her stumble out to the van that was waiting for her. The twinkie was her chariot and the people inside were now my real friends. I turned back and walked back into the heart of the celebration with a new found exhilaration for the hours that were to come.
