After I slipped Sarah's clothes onto my damp body, I pressed my ear to the door. Silence.
My heart was beating like a drum, it was thumping so loud in my ears it made me question if my hearing was even accurate. There could have been someone on the other side of that door but my nerves could have been masking the subtle sounds of movement. I took a deep breath, placed my hand on the unlocked doornob, and said a silent prayer to myself.
Cautiously I opened the bathroom door. There was a painful squeaking noise coming from the hinges that made me cringe. I felt the hairs on the back of my neck rise as I stared at Rafe's door, pleading with whatever god or gods who would listen that he wouldn't emerge.
I tried my best to silence my heavy breathing because the eerie hall seemed to echo even the quietest of sounds. When a few seconds past and there was no acknowledgement of my attempt of a break out, I bravely started to make my way down the hall.
I was a ninja, slithering through the Cameron estate as quiet as a mouse. With every step, my chest tightened with a mix of fear and adrenaline. Where I was, I could see my ticket to freedom. The staircase was my neverland, it was my golden goose, and it was my Jesus Christ all in plain view. Like when a baby takes its first breath, putting my weight onto the wooden stairs almost brought me to tears.
I bit my lip to try to cover the small smile creeping onto my swollen face before I continued my silent journey to immunity from Rafe and Ward Cameron.
Unfortunately, my fantasy world of escaping smoothly was just that— a fantasy. My delusions and state of euphoria was interrupted by the slightest creaking of the wooden floors behind me followed by someone clearing their throat.
I squeezed my eyes shut and mouthed the word Fuck to myself before facing the consequences of my actions. My arms were out to my side, in a mock-balancing like stance, and clenched my hands into fists before innocently spinning around on my heels. What I saw standing in my view was totally unexpected.
"Who are you and what are you doing in my sisters clothes?" a young girl with a long dark braid hostility questioned. She was standing in the middle of the hallway with her checkered pajama bottoms and a Stranger Things shirt on. She obviously had just gotten up out of bed because her hair was all disheveled and her glasses were crooked—signaling that she wasn't expecting to see anyone at that late hour. Fair honestly.
Her tone definitely wasn't quiet and i didn't want Wheezy(I gathered that this was the other Cameron sibling) to out me to the entire household so I had to think fast.
I placed my finger over my mouth and motioned her with my hand to come closer to me—in hindsight I probably looked like a complete loon because she had no clue who I was but she followed my silent gesture.
She hesitantly walked closer to me and once she was in whispering distance, I started to talk out of my ass. I whispered "Hi I'm Andy and you must be Wheezy!"
