Aaron walked into work that day in a more chipper mood than the team had ever seen him. The coffee tasted better, his pens weren't running out of ink, the copier wasn't jammed, and best of all he saw you. For the first time in three years, Aaron had the chance to see the one person he thought would only live in his mind as a perfect fleeting memory, but now you were here, in Virginia, and as if the universe wished it, he ran into you.

"Sir," Penelope grinned as he walked by, saying good morning to everyone on the team. "Something's got you in a good mood today."

"I just ran into an old friend," he explained and Penelope tilted her head.

"Old friend, huh?"

Aaron gave her a look as if to say you know who I'm talking about Penelope, keep quiet. And the minute she registered the look, her eyes went wide and she almost started to freak out.

"She's here?!" she mouthed and pointed down at the ground, but meant to reference Virginia.

Aaron nodded but pressed a finger to his lips and Penelope nodded in understanding, zipping her lips and throwing away the imaginary key.

Penelope was the only person in the entire office that Aaron had told more in-depth about his summer trip to western Canada and in his defence, the information was a form of payment for another kind of information.

Two and a half years ago...

"Garcia, can you look this case up for me? And this officer?"

"Sir, this is an RCMP case," Penelope noted immediately. "I can do it, but why do you need it?" she asked.

Recently there had been a high-profile drug bust in Toronto and Aaron had read an article about it. Coming across your name, he became curious and wanted to check and see if you were one of the officers injured in the line of duty. He knew it shouldn't have mattered, you weren't a part of his life anymore, but he desperately wished you were and this was the only way he'd be hanging on by a thread.

"I know the officer," he explained.

Perhaps it was his tone or the inflection of his voice, but Penelope zeroed in on him.

"You know her?"

"Yes," he said slowly.

"Oh my God, you know her! Did you meet on your trip?!"

"Penelope shhh!" he hushed, shutting the door to her office behind him. He knew that look, she wanted something. "Penelope," his voice was wary. "What do you want?"

"Details," she grinned simply. "And I can get you all the information you need and more."

He debated his other options, but he had already tried his own line of research which was why he was there.

"Not a word of this is to be said to anyone," he said firmly and Penelope just looked at him with a beaming smile, ready for her story.

. . .

Penelope had too many questions so she followed Aaron into his office and shut the door behind her along with the blinds in case of lip readers, aka Spencer.
