A / N: For Nelleke9 😍 Thank you for your request! It's a little sad and something completely different to what I have ever written, but it felt right with the prompt and it turned out so cute. Hope you like it!
P R O M P T: "Hold my hand, you'll be fine"
W A R N I N G: mention of funeral
You looked up at your reflection in the mirror, taking in the dark circles and the red puffy eyes that had formed over the past few days. You weren't sure if you were ready to face this day as it would be the hardest day of your life so far. Your grandmother had been your best friend throughout your life. She would pick you up from school, keep you company while you waited for your parents to come home and join you in the talent shows you liked to do with your friends, acting as one of the judges or the presenter. You wiped away another tear that rolled down your cheek as you thought about having to say goodbye to your best friend today.
With the number of tears that had left your eyes already, you were surprised each time another found its way onto your cheek and you chuckled lightly at the state of you in the mirror. You slowly pulled your brush through your hair, images of your childhood running through your mind while you brushed your teeth as well. You didn't apply any makeup, knowing that it would be completely cried off within the first hour, so you headed downstairs once you were done getting ready. You had been struggling to eat something the last few days and even though you felt your tummy rumble at the thought of food, you decided to just sit on the sofa, waiting for your best friend to arrive.
It didn't take much longer before you heard the keys in the door and a small sigh left your lips, knowing there was someone here to support you now. George had a sympathetic smile on his face when he walked into the room and he crouched down in front of you, your head tilted down while you sniffled softly as his hand cupped your cheek. "I'm here, y/n". He said soothingly and you glanced up into his eyes, seeing that he was struggling to keep the tears back as well. George had been your best friend since kindergarten and he had spent many afternoons with your grandmother, so you knew he was devastated to have lost her too. "Have you eaten anything?"
His voice woke you up from your thoughts. You shook your head lightly and wanted to tell him that you weren't hungry but George had gotten up off the floor already. He walked over to the kitchen and before you knew it, he was back, holding a banana for you to take. "I know it may be difficult, but you need to eat something". He said and you accepted the piece of fruit, grateful to George that he was here to take care of you. After you had eaten the banana, you felt a little better until you noticed the clock on the wall, it was time to go. You sighed deeply before you stood up and walked over to the hallway where there was a beautiful bunch of white roses on the console table, your grandma's favourite flowers.
George noticed the hesitation in your movements once you got closer to the door and he placed himself next to you. "Are you okay?" He asked and you turned your head to look up at him. Your tears seemed to have run out for now, but there was a silent sob leaving your lips when you gently shook your head. George wrapped his strong arms around your shoulder and pulled you against his body momentarily while you buried your face into his chest. You stood there for a moment before George pulled back and stuck his hand out slightly. "Hold my hand, I'll be with you all day, you'll be fine". You smiled at him while you folded your fingers around his, the bouquet in your other hand. It was time to go.
----
Your grandmother was such a warm and caring person, loving every moment of her life and appreciating the little things throughout it. The way she lived her life reflected through the day and the funeral was beautiful. It was more of a day to celebrate her instead of to say goodbye to her and you felt joy once you noticed all the memories she had brought to all of the guests' that had come. George had kept his promise, he had been by your side the entire day, his hand there to hold whenever you needed him. You wouldn't have been able to give the small speech you had neatly written down if it wasn't for his hand on your lower back. Your voice had started to tremble at first, but you had cleared your throat when you felt his touch, strength and courage flying through you.
