I woke as I felt the sun shining on my face through the door side window. Was it possible it all had been a dream? "No, that experience was way too vivid for a dream." I jumped up rapidly, almost bumping my head on the table beside my door. I checked all the windows. Even though it was light outside, I was still too scared to open or unlock any of my doors.
Checking the clock, I rushed to get ready for another day of meat inspection and packing, thinking that maybe it was time to look for another job. While showering, I remembered my unwelcome visitor last night and still could not believe the turn of events. I knew the Minotaur existed, but not ones that had the ability to shapeshift into very humanoid, almost demon-like creatures. What was he, and more importantly, what did he want with me? What had he meant when he said, "we could have fun together."? Did I even want to find out?
With no more questions answered then before, I quickly washed my hair and body, as I continued thinking about the Minotaur and his freaky, yet fascinating appearance. I really was wacky! I should not be thinking anything of the beast except how to stay away from him. If anyone knew what I was think about that would probably lock me away, or better yet, sacrifice me to the nightly visitors themselves.
It was settled. I would not think any more of the mysterious Minotaur and I would be sure to arrive home every day on time, no longer risking myself to the creature of the dark or any of his minions. Hurriedly, I emerged from the shower, dressing quickly and barely brushing my teeth. I was late. Time had gotten away from me the more I went over the encounter in my mind. Maybe I really was going insane. Being lonely can do that to you. Add that in with the crazy nightly monster fest, and I was sure I was a certified headcase.
I arrived just on time to run into my miserable, infuriating boss, Carl, a short, middle-aged white-haired male with a pot belly and a drinking problem, my day was instantly made worse. Just another excuse for me to start looking for another position, I supposed. "Well, well. Look who we have here. Little troublemaker. I know you left past curfew last night, and now, you're coming in late. What will I do with you, Maggie?"
"You know you aren't going to do anything, Carl. You need me so just leave me alone and let me get to work.," I replied while rolling my blue eyes and huffing under my breath. With that he walked away, even more irritated than before.
Finally making it to my station, I took out my supplies and got ready to work. I used my own knives and tools to inspect and cut the meat for packaging. Pulling on my gloves, I felt an unusual chill drift through the air, and not the normal cold chill frequently occurring in the factory. No, this chill felt dark and dangerous. Zipping my jacket, a little tighter, and trying to ignore all the negative ideas playing in my head, I got back to work.
It was not too long before I began hearing things, or so I thought. I swore I heard someone call my name, "Oh sweet Maggie" A tremor of fear flowed through me as the voice sent goosebumps up my arms and down my spine. No, it could not be. There is no way the beast was here. They could only come out at night. Hoping to drown out the ceaseless voice, I popped in my headphones and turned on my favorite song, Elton John's "I'm Still Standing." The song was very calming for me and helped me through a lot of challenging times, especially when my mother passed away.
This one time nothing would work, not even my comforting song. Through the tune and others, I could still hear the voice whisper calling me through the headphones. "I give up!", I shouted inwardly. "You listen here stupid, bull man. I will not be tricked by you. I do not want anything from you, and I will avoid you for the rest of my life, no matter how long it takes! Do you hear me, you stupid horned man cow?" I knew the male heard me because he snickered in my ear. Unfortunately, the other workers around me heard as well. I was receiving all kinds of crazy looks as I hid my face in shame. The evil male had tricked me and from his evil snort, had gotten exactly what he wanted out of his transgressions.
Thankfully, the rest of my shift passed in silence. The infuriating bull seemed to have disappeared into thin air and I was incredibly grateful. I managed to package and freeze five cases of meat before it was time to head home for the day. Making sure I left early enough to catch the latest transport, I entered the bus and sat, enjoying the rest. It had been a tiring night and day, and I needed the rest the weekend ensured.
Slipping inside, I headed straight for my bedroom, grabbing my comfiest pjs and sliding them on quickly. I grabbed my favorite pillow and blanket, diving onto my cozy couch and switching on the tv. The first program that came on was the news. Apparently, monster sightings and attacks were increasing every night. Not surprising in the least, seeing how people were getting crazier by the day. I was proof of that, whether I wanted to admit it or not.
I switched the channel swiftly. I was trying to escape my nightmarish reality, not relive it. Just then, my doorbell rung multiple times. "Who could be at the door this close to dark?" I pondered as I got up to answer the door, but when I peered out to see who it was, no one was there. "Maybe, it's just a glitch?" Though I knew it was not. After leaving here all these years, the doorbell had not once rung on its own. Just as I was about to resume watching tv, the bell rung once more, and I unquestionably knew it was not a glitch. I was looking right at the opposite side of the door, and no one was there. I knew exactly who it was then as the same creepy chill from earlier moved up from my feet and to the rest of my body. It was him. He was back. How he was able to be present without physically appearing I did not understand, but I knew with one hundred percent certainty that it was him.
I huffed in annoyance. "Why won't you just leave me alone, you insufferable ass? If you are aiming to drive me off the deep end. I can tell you; it's working." I was tired and though I found the events intriguing to say the least, I did not know if I could stand much more of the situation. I did not want to live out my life in fear. "Female, if you would just let me in, I could rid you of all your troubles." I understood his hidden meaning instantly. This male did not want to eat me, not in a literal, dining on my body, in the traditional sense anyway. Incredibly, I was not completely against the idea. I had to have a concussion because something was seriously wrong with me if I was considering offering my virtue to a monster.
