Chapter 13: An Unexpected Turn

Kate's POV

As I stood there in disbelief at the fact that my niece has Leukemia...I started reviewing every Messer and Jacobs' medical record I could put my hands on. "Hey Kate, whatcha doing??" I heard Tara say. "Reviewing some stuff!" I said, not having the heart to tell her...yet! She put this card on the counter, wanting me to read it! As I read it, my heart broke into millions of tiny pieces...but it also filled with joy! "You guys got a record deal?!?!?! That's so awesome, I'm so happy for you!!" I said, right after I screamed with Tara. "I know, Liz is so excited...she's where she belongs, finally!" she said, smiling. "I bet so, I'm glad she's happy!" I said. "Okay, no...this isn't right! Go and get mom and the twins then go to Liz's room, I'll be there in a second!" I continued. "Alright?" she said, confused. She ran to the waiting room and got them, while I got the paperwork ready...this isn't gonna be fun, at all!

Melody's POV

Liz and I were writing and testing a song, when everybody came into her room. "Well, I guess that just ended!" I said. Both of us laughed. "What's going on?" Liz and I said at the same time, then laughed. "We have no idea!" mom said. Kate came in right after Iris, and right away I could tell it was something bad. "First, congratulations on your record deal, I'm so proud of you!" she said, excitedly. We thanked her and awaited what she was gonna say next! "Secondly......" she paused and looked at all of us, then took a breath. "Liz........you have Leukemia!" she said as sincerely and quietly as she could. "What?!?!" my mom freaked. Tara was drinking water and choked. Both the twins' mouths dropped, and mine did the same thing. I stormed out of the room, trying not to let Liz see me cry! "Melody wait!" I heard Tara scream. I kept walking, putting my hair behind my ears! "Melody!" Tara said! "What Tara, what do you want me to do? Pretend that everything's okay, go in there and pretend that I'm okay with this?" I asked turning around, starting to cry! "I can't do this Tara, not again!" I continued. She walked to me, then hugged me. "I know it's scary, all of us do...but she needs you, you are the only person she wants with her right now!" she said. "You have to be strong, for her!" she continued "How'd you become such a great little sister?" I asked, smiling. "I've had a great teacher all these years!" she said, smiling. "I'm sorry I snapped at you, I...I just don't want to lose her, the way I lost dad!" I said. "That's what I'm here for, snapping at and blaming!" she said, laughing. I laughed with her. "Come on, let's go take this on...together!" I said trying to keep it together and smile. She took my hand and back to Liz's room we went!

When we got back to Liz's room, Liz was standing up on her own...which was a major improvement for her! Anyway, Kate was talking to her and mom...explaining everything! Liz turned around, saw me, and started crying, really bad. I ran to her and wrapped my arms around her. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry!" I said crying as well. We stood there and cried forever, we were scared out of our minds! She knew that my dad died from cancer, she knew everything about our family...about me, and I couldn't bare losing her too! "We're gonna fight this, all of us are gonna fight this with you....and we are gonna win, I promise!" I said, knowing that promise could break at any moment, which made me cry even worse. "I don't wanna lose her, my heart can't take it!" I mouthed to my aunt, tears running down my face. My mom, of course saw me and started crying too! "It's gonna be okay, you're gonna be okay...and I'm gonna be right here, so is everybody else...we've got this!!" I said, as Liz looked at me with tears in her eyes. "And I'm gonna go to school and I'm gonna absorb everything and come back up here and fill you in!" I said. "Yeah, me too!" Tara said, putting her hand on my shoulder. "Us too!" Iris and Elsa said at the same time, laying their heads on Tara's stomach. "See....this is what sisters do, this is what it's all about!" Kate said. "All of us...are right here! I promise!" I said, smiling. She hugged me and whispered "thank you" in my ear! "You're welcome!" I whispered back!
