At a video store late that night, an obnoxious buzz emanates from a fluorescent bulb. Two hands reach up to twist the bulb from its socket in the quiet video store's ceiling. The clerk, standing on a ladder, gently places the old bulb on the shelf while reaching for a replacement. He screws it in, but the annoying blinking persists.
Lydia's car approaches, and Jackson gets out, in the middle of a conversation with Lydia, and begins arguing with her through the open window.
Jackson scoffs, proclaiming, "Hoosiers is not only the best basketball film ever made, but also the best sports film—"
Lydia shrugs, maintaining a straight smile on her face. "No."
Jackson, his teeth clenched, retorts, "Gene Hackman and Dennis Hopper star in it—"
Lydia's expression remains unchanged. "No."
Jackson grumbles, "I swear to God, you're going to like it."
Lydia shrugs, grabbing her lipstick and applying it to her lips while looking in the mirror. "No."
"I'm not going to watch The Notebook again," Jackson says, already agitated. With a smirk behind the glass, she presses the window button, closing it on him.
Enraged, Jackson storms into the bookstore, determined to find The Notebook. He meticulously searches row by row, passing the now-vacant ladder and replacement bulbs. Frustrated, Jackson lets out a sigh. "Could someone please help me find The Notebook?" he mutters, glancing around. However, there is no response. The cash register is unmanned, and there are no other customers in sight. He returns to the shelves, thumbing through the DVDs when something catches his eye.
Jackson notices two shoes on the floor, with their toes turned upward, visible through the mesh of the shelf. The DVDs slip from his grasp as he stands frozen. With trembling hands, he takes a hesitant step to the left. As he moves around the corner of the shelf, he sees more of the lifeless body. The shoes are followed by a piece of a leg. Overwhelmed with fear, Jackson takes another stride, his breath growing shallower with each step, until he eventually discovers...
On the floor lies the Clerk, lifeless and covered in blood. The sight sends Jackson staggering backward, colliding with the ladder. It topples over, causing cables to snap and creating an electric spark. In a burst of crackling electricity, all the lights flicker and abruptly extinguish, casting the store into darkness. Startled by a noise, Jackson spins around, only to catch a glimpse of a massive figure moving behind a nearby shelf. The shelf rattles, causing DVD cases to tremble. Whatever it is, it now stands between him and the exit.
