Pennies for Silence

Breathless

—/—/—/—/—/—/—/—

Screaming, so loud,

Like ice in the summer;

No, no, so you cry,

As the echoes mutter.

Repeat, on repeat,

Their words you won't hear;

You think they're from me,

Memories in your ear.

This blind war you wage,

Against life itself;

It's your monster who crushed,

All the hope which I felt.

When lines were to be crossed,

And rules to be broken;

Impossible was so,

Till it proved misspoken.

And pain was with purpose,

Misfortune had a cause;

I even pictured good,

From the blood on your claws.

But no, no, you cry,

All for what you killed;

You can't take it back,

How I wish that you could!

So stubborn you are,

So stuck in your ways;

Wake up, suck it up,

'Cause those times have changed.

But your nature's so cold,

Like this mind's prison cells;

Where chains now engulf me,

For as long as lies sell.

You ignore the truth,

You feed on deception;

And what good's a monster?

Without strength, I reckon.

If it's my words indeed,

I cannot confirm;

You struck, you sucked away,

All the secrets I learned.

And so I too wonder,

As I loll in black sleep;

What good I've forgotten,

My youth like a dream.

Was I free? Was I brave?

Was I spirited, strong?

Did I fly on wide wings?

Like a bird on a song.

Or was my past scarred?

In bruises? In fear?

Was it the culprit?

Of bringing you here.

My head further falls,

Adrift in these waves;

My boat's not afloat,

Not as tomorrow fades.

My future has frayed.
