Camila's POV
It's been a couple weeks now.
Lauren and I had our last intimate moment sometime ago. However these past few weeks she has been studying the other 2 inmates in the isolation chamber with me. She followed my wishes, and doesn't interact with me as much now. Her concentration has distracted her from me, at times. When she would walk past my cell, we would hold our gazes for a second, and we both knew it was much more than that.
I am patient. I'll wait for her, however long it takes for this to blow over. I knew deep down that I loved her, I love her enough to let her go for now.
But, I have my own agenda too. I am in the process of a plan to escape this prison, and I have a good idea on how.
Last night for the very first time, I noticed something.
Just as the night guards were securing the perimeters before sleep time, they did it in a routine. A monotonous routine they are even tired of doing. Inspect the cell, lock the door, check the cameras and stand guard. They did it in order, with ease and no intense mental pressure.
If they are so used to doing this routine day by day, then their concentration may diminish after many days working. I noticed that one of the guards had worked every night the past 5 nights. If he happens to be working again, I will initiate a small experiment, testing a method that would influence my technique on breaking out.
I sat up in bed, and blinked my eyes wide open. I knew what I was going to do.
"GUARDS!"
I usually never call out, or even speak to these guards. So I knew they would be suspicious if they heard my voice calling out.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7...
He stood before me in 7 seconds.
—"Inmate 1030, what is the problem?"
"Can I please have a chess board?"
He frowned at me, but I maintained my straight face.
—"Why this request now, at 10:00 at night?"
"I need to calm my mind, please get it for me."
I knew they had a chess board at the security checkpoint. I managed to steal a few chess pieces before, but I needed one more piece. One more piece and I will be set in stone with my plan to escape.
The tired guard walked over, then came back with the board and pieces.
I scoot over toward the meal compartment opening, where he laid the board down, and in this tiny space we started to play.
He made moves that were impulsive, done with no thought on repercussions. I take this into consideration, and I make my wise moves, taking down his possessions one by one. He looked down at the board in confusion, not knowing his next move.
I watch his eyes, and they didn't scan the board like mine did. I saw his moves from a mile away.
He didn't see the bigger picture, and he didn't see out of the box. As his concentration was fixated on my one hand moving my chess piece, in plain sight my other hand swiped one of the pieces off the edge of the board. Because he was so focused on my game at hand, he didn't even notice the missing chess piece off my side.
"Checkmate."
He grunted, wrapped up the game by gathering all the pieces and board, heading back to his security station.
Little did he know, he left the meal compartment slot open, and with a chess piece in my hands.
I smile.
