Camila's POV
It might be my realistic imagination, or maybe my mind is playing tricks on me.
I hear old classical music, something that you'd hear from 1920s New Orleans.
My body slumps down to the cold floor, in a total silence as my head plays these tunes in the night. Why am I hearing this? My head is heavy, and I feel the blood seeping out of gashes on my face.
I'm in the cage, and words can't express how horrific these conditions are. There is no shelter, the wind hits me like I am invisible to the force, and my limbs tremble as the coldness ripples through me.
Yet, I hear this beautiful music. It almost seems like past lives still inhabit this space, and their spirits are trying to calm me.
The music isn't in my head, rather I can hear it through the wind that whispers through the bars to this cage. I can hear it, and I'm starting to think I'm losing my mind.
"Mateo, I love you" I mumble, as I sit back, letting my body rot away in this cage.
A few moments pass, and the silence of the courtyard haunts me. The music has stopped and it's getting dark. I'm starting to see shadows dart across the field. No wonder any inmate is scared when threatened to be sent to the cage, it's not just physical pain you go through...It's the fear of the unknown that rises above all.
My eyes watch as the array of black figures sprint across the field. I cannot believe what I'm seeing, I blink several times, rub my eyes, and they are in plain sight.
But they were not threatening, in my perspective. It looked like past inmates running along the grass, playing catch with a ball.
It was so un-earthly, to see this. I knew no one would believe me if I told them.
All of a sudden, they all stopped then turned to look at me. My eyes widen, now I felt scared.
"Stop, STOP!"
I scream as they all came toward me at unimaginable speeds, and they all stopped directly in front of the cage I was in. Their beady eyes and realistic features pierced through my soul.
"Please. Don't hurt me." I speak, with my hands covering my face.
—"You killed your son."
—"It was all your fault."
All the figure's hands raise and grip the cage I stood alone in. I screamed as their voices grew darker and more louder.
—"You are a terrible mother."
—"Mateo called out for you in his last dying moments."
—"AND YOU WEREN'T THERE!"
I tighten my eyes, and completely cover my face. Their words are hurting me more than any physical pain would.
My blood curdling scream anguished the empty field, and that's the moment I realised...
I was alone.
My eyes open and the men are gone, and I see no one in front of me.
I start to cry, my head was filled with the words of the mysterious spirits that tormented me.
Tears pour out of my eyes, and I think about what Mateo would have gone through in his last moments on earth. There is no match to a mother's grieving scream when she aches for her baby. It has been over 5 years since, yet I still feel the pain in my chest like it was yesterday.
Between my wails for a lifeline, I see a figure speed-walk through the doors of the prison toward me. It was dark, and I couldn't make out who it was.
