"Oh Angel," her father's eyes lit up when he saw her walk in the hospital room."Hi daddy," Simone kissed his cheek, not even bothering to correct him when he called her by her mother's name.
There's no point in correcting him anymore, because it's always the same conversation every time.
"Brian just left?" She asked him, even though he most likely wouldn't be able to give her a proper answer in the first place.
"Brian," Mr. Evan's lips curved into a smile. "He was such a good baby yuh know. Never really cried unless he was hungry or tired."
"Good to know," Simone shrugged out of her coat and laid it down on the couch right next to her purse.
"Angel?" her father called when she sat down on the chair beside his bed and pulled out the book she brought to finish reading to him.
"Yes daddy?"
"When's thé baby due?"
"Wh— What?" She was very taken aback by that question, not sure if her father thought he was talking to his late wife Angel, or his daughter who was actually sitting in front of him.
"The baby, Simone. When's it due?" He repeated, sure enough talking both to and about her. "When am I gonna get to meet my newest grand baby?"
"Daddy..." Simone whispered in the smallest voice. "Daddy, there is no baby."
"What? What happened? Is everything okay? Are you and Malcolm okay?"
"Oh Daddy..." she sighed.
There was no use in telling him that she had lost both her unborn baby and husband in a very tragic and life altering car accident almost six years ago. One, because he'd most likely just forget it anyway. And two, because she didn't want to go through the pain having to tell that story one more time.
"Malcolm is doing good," Simone whispered as she choked back tears. "And the baby is good too."
"Oh don't cry Simone," his frail hand reached out to hold onto hers. "You'll get to meet your baby before you even know it."
"But..." she stopped herself from saying anything in response to that. "Yeah... hopefully I will get to hold my baby one day," she said as a single tear slid down her cheek and landed on her chest. "Maybe I'll get a second chance at being a mom," she whispered this part.
"Did you find out the gender yet?" He asked her.
"It's... It's a girl..." she was no longer able to hold the tears back now. They just came flooding from her eyes as she thought about what her life would be like right now had that driver not been driving over 90 mph on black ice that one night— as she thought about the three lives, her unborn child, husband, and teenage driver in the other vehicle, that were all lost that night.
