Four Years Later
December, A Few Days Before Christmas

"Jordan, it's late as hell and you said you were gonna be home hours ago," Simone said into her phone. It was sitting on the kitchen counter while she took another batch of homemade snickerdoodle cookies out of the oven.

"I know baby," he held the phone between his ear and his shoulder so his hands were free to move around boxes of canned goods him and a bunch of students/volunteers had collected and brought to the community center— the same one Jordan had first told Simone he wanted to open up back when they first met.

It was a few days before Christmas and Jordan had been spending most of his days there trying to organize a drive for the people in the community who didn't have much for Christmas. And that's not the only thing they were doing. They'd also organized a toy drive, they'd distributed warm clothes to the homeless that winter, and so much more.

Because if it's one thing Jordan has always been passionate about, it's helping his community— he just never had the means to do it before. But now that he does, that's all he pours his time into since he stopped working at the warehouse. Well, that and his family, because Simone and Jazmine have and always will come before anything else.

"You know, yet you still been there all day?"

"Baby," Jordan was holding the phone in his hand again. "We're extremely busy here. Christmas is in a few days, and there's so much we still gotta do."

"I think you overwork yourself Jordan. You've been there since 6am and it's after 7 now. You need a break. You need to come home."

"But they need me here."

"Yeah, well your daughter and very pregnant wife also needs you," she held her hand over her very large bump.

Simone was in her third trimester. Her due date is early January, but she could pop any day now, which is exactly why she couldn't go down to the community center to see or help Jordan out. He wouldn't even let her leave the house unless it's urgent, and barely wants her doing anything at home either.

"See, even Jazmine wishes you were home," Simone held the phone down to their three year old.

"Daddy, when are you coming home?" She said in the extra sad voice Simone coached her on just seconds before calling Jordan. She even stuck her bottom lip out when she said it to make it sound more believable. "I miss you, and I wish you'd come home now."

"Y'all are something else," Jordan couldn't help but laugh. "Jazmine, I know mommy told you to say that. What she bribe you with this time? A cookie?"

"No. Mommy said I can have a piece of your chocolate cake if I—"

"Snitch," Simone mumbled, putting the phone back to her own ear. "Why does your child talk so much?"

"Oh, so she's just my child?"
