sue and vinnie needed to make a stop and the dress shop and emily and i tagged along. while vinnie and sue looked around, emily and i just wandered around the store. we would steal looked at each other every so often.

"what about this blue silk?" we turned around to see vinnie looking at the dress,"do you think my hips are wide enough? i wanna look really fertile for you know who." she said with a smile.

betty spoke up as she worked,"oh no vinnie, don't tell me you still got eyes for that joseph lyman."

"shhh betty don't tell," she turned back to us,"betty knows all my secrets."

betty lightly laughed,"well you're in here once a week and you sure can talk."

vinnie gasped as she saw a dress she liked,"what is that?"

betty turned to see the dress she was looking at,"oh that ones spoken for. custom piece i'm making for jane humphrey."

vinnie groaned,"ugh, jane humphrey has the best taste. she always looks so ample."

emily gagged,"jane humphrey is a snob and she's in love with austin."

"from what i hear, a lot of girls in town fancy your brother." betty added.

i sighed,"well that's too bad for them. he's marrying sue."

"y/n!" sue lightly scolded me.

i sent her a fake look of guilt,"oh, sorry i forgot it was supposed to be a secret." emily snickered at my fake apology.

betty smiled,"oh don't worry, i know how to keep a secret. congratulations sue! i suppose i'll be making you a wedding dress?"

sue sighed,"oh i don't think i can afford you."

before i added another sarcastic remark i judged emily so she wouldn't miss it,"she might not even go through with it."

"y/n! stop." sue said obviously fed up with my comments.

emily leaned her head on my shoulder trying to contain her laughter.

sue, emily and i made it to mrs. packards to start going through her dead husbands things.

"god there are more clothes in here than in betty's dress shop," emily said while picking up multiple pieces of clothing.

"yup, and we have to sort through all of them," i complained.

emily walked over to the globe and spun it around,"look guys, i'm traveling the world."

sue looked up at her,"i thought you were supposed to be helping." i lightly slapped sue's arm silently telling her to let emily be.

emily didn't even acknowledge sue's comment,"isn't it funny how this whole big earth exists, and we'll probably never see any of it besides amherst?"

"we've been to geneva new york. our aunt used to live there." sue recalled.

"did she move?" emily asked.

i shook my head,"nope, she died."

emily looked at me for second before changing the subject,"i wanna see a real volcano."

i chuckled,"well, you'd have to leave amherst for that."

emily picked up a top hat which gave me an idea,"oh let me see that em," she handed it to me and i put it on,"how do i look?"

"handsome," she replied. her eyes went wide when she remembered sue was with us,"oh um i mean-"

"it's okay em. um sue figured it out."

sue nodded and emily sighed,"oh ok, good."

i smiled at both of them before i fixed the hat in the mirror,"guys look, im a man," they laughed as i paced around the room,"i do what i want, i go where i want. i have the right to vote. i can legally own property. i can study volcanoes on mount vesuvius. wait, i have an idea."

sue looked up at me,"what?"

"let's put these clothes on and sneak into that lecture."

emily's eyes lit up,"oh my god yes!"

sue shook her head,"that's silly we can't."

"why not?" emily and i said at the same time.

"that's the sort of thing that works in a story but not in real life."

"what's the worse that could happen?" i asked.

"well, you could embarrass yourselves." she tried.

emily scoffed,"well i am willing to take that risk. i mean it really is absurd that we can't go. what're they do afraid of? maybe they're scared if they teach us how the world works we'll figure out how to take over."

we all nodded and hummed in agreement.

sue put down what she was doing,"well, you two have fun. good luck."

we both looked at her. i out down the hat,"wait, um sue, you don't want to come with us?"

"can't. i told austin i'd meet him to look over things for the new house. but you two have fun." she said adding a wink at the end.

emily looked down trying to hide the blush in her cheeks. sue walked out and i turned back to emily.

she looked at me with a small smile,"come here. let me do your tie."
