The Royal and The Housemaid

a new job, a new start (33)

Today's Monday which means that I start my job as William's assistant. Ella promised to stay with mom, so when she arrives I quickly whisper to mom.

"Please, hang on mom."

I go back to the house and take a shower. I open the clothes bag that was sent to me and take out my uniform which consists of a white shirt with a logo and black pants.

I change into them and pull my hair into a ponytail. After that I put together some breakfast for myself and then head for the bus stop.

I take the bus I was advised to by the instructions that I was sent along with my uniform. The moment the bus starts to move, I start to panic and jitters run through my body. Before I know it I'm switching seats after every few minutes just for the sake of giving myself something to do.

When the bus stops I get off and pull out the map I was sent. After a couple of minutes, I stop in front of a tall building that has a glass front and "Blake Ltd." is spelled out across it.

Taking a deep breath I walk in and make my way to the front desk.

"Good morning. I'm Cassandra..." I'm cut off by the lady. "Of course. I'll let Mr. Blake know that you're here."

She picks up a phone and motions me to sit on one of couches in the waiting space. I only just sit down when a familiar voice makes me stand up.

"You're right on time. Welcome to your new job." William extends a hand towards me.

I shake it saying. "Thanks."

William starts walking and I fall into step beside him. We walk for a few minutes until we reach a double door. He pushes it open and we walk in.

The room has a desk at one side and a small sitting area at the other. One of the walls has shelves full of files and books.

"This is my office. You'll find me here most of the time." He tells me. And then turns towards his desk. "Your first task is to review a presentation that I need for a meeting this afternoon."

Motioning to the computer on the desk, he leaves. I take a deep breath and get to work. The moment I tap the mouse, the screen lights up already displaying the presentation. I scroll through the slides, reading through what is written.

I find out that this company ships things to and fro. It's done both by air and by sea. I read every single line and go through all the graphs and diagrams too.

I'm half way done when William comes back in, followed by another man, who looks twice our age and has a beard. They sit down on the couch without acknowledging me and talk about I have no idea what.

I focus on the task at hand and mute out the two of them. After some time, I'm snapped back to attention by my "boss."

"Would you mind getting us some coffee?" William says. I nod and leave the room. When I reach the lobby I realise that I have no idea where the cafeteria is.

I head over to the front desk, where the same lady's sitting. "Hi! Umm..."

"You can call me Helen." She says. Wow! Is this a coincidence or what?

"Helen. Can you please tell me where I can get coffee from?" She gives me instructions and I follow them to find my way to the cafeteria. I get two coffees and then go back to the office.

Both of them are still sitting when I walk in William takes the cups from me saying. "The meeting starts in ten minutes."

This means that I should work faster. I pick up the pace and scan the ret of the presentation. The moment the last slide ends, William asks. "Done?"

I look up to find the other man gone and Will standing in front of the desk. I mutter a 'yes' and turn off the computer. He leads me to the conference room. It's as large as the office but with more seats.

None of them are occupied  yet. He turns to me and explains. "During a meeting you will be present but other people should not realise that. This is in case anything is needed. Otherwise, it'll be more like free time."

I nod in understanding and put up the presentation onto the screen. Once people start to trickle in, William takes over and I sit down on one of the chairs lining the back of the room.

The lights are turned off when the time comes and the meeting begins. William stands before the screen, explaining to the people.

He looks like a normal guy who has a job and will go on to marry a normal girl and have a family. But damn! Whoever that girl is she'll be lucky.
