I wake up to find my body burning with fever. It's Friday. I have to go to work. But how can I in this conndition? I can barely move my hands.
"Mom!" I scream. It's then that I realise that my throat also aches when I speak.
"What is it honey?" She asks opening the door and poking her head in.
"I'm not feeling well. I don't think I can go to work." I explain.
"Why don't you call and ask for a day off?" She suggests turning around.
I nod in reply and get out off bed. My head spins as I try to walk. But slowly I make my way to the phone in the kitchen. I pick up the reciever and dial Helen's number.
I rub my eyes as I wait for her to pick up my phone. She does not pick up and the call disconects. Mom hands me a glass of water and smile at her to say thank you. I call her again. This time she picks up after three rings.
I start talking before she can say anything
"Hi Helen! It's me Cassandra. I called to let you know that I won't be able to make it to work because I've got a really bad fever and can't even walk without my head spining. Can you please excuse me for today? I'll be really thankful if you do."
I take a sip of water while I wait for Helen to reply.
I sprue out the water when a male voice replies instead of a female one "Uh it's not Helen. It's me, William."
I pull away the phone from my ear and give out a muffled scream.
"I'm sorry to disturb you. Did I dial the wrong number?" I ask shocked.
"No. You got the right number. She left her phone in the kitchen and I came to get a glass of water for Ashley and saw it ringing and picked it up." He tells me.
"Oh." I manage to say.
Then it strikes me. If Ashley and William are still together, then...then am I fired? The thought terrifies me.
I decide to ask him "Uh William?"
"Mmmm" He acknowledges me.
"If you and Ashley are still together, then am I fired?"
"No. Why would you ask me that?" He asks.
"Because of you know what she said the last time I saw you guys." I remind him.
"Oh right! I completely forgot. I talked her out of it. She cooled down soon after." He says. I let out the breath that I had been holding in.
"Thank You." I say softly.
"That's alright. I know that your family needs the money." The only reason he let me keep it was because he felt sorry for me!
He interrupts my thoughts by saying "Oh! And you can take the day off. I'll let Helen know."
"Thanks!" I tell him cheerfully and hang up.
"What did she say?" Mom asks from behind me.
"I can have the day off." I tell her.
I decide to keep my talk with William a secret for now.
