I stay where I'm standing. Helen leaves with Mitchell. I look at Mrs. Blake expecting an explanation.
"Come sit." She says, motioning to the chair on which Mitchell was siting.
I walk forward and sit down. I put my hands in my lap and look down at them. After a few more minutes she sets down her cup and closes the laptop. I look up at her at the exact same time she does. She's a female version of Mason.
"So, tell me about your background, Cassandra." She says leaning back in her chair.
"Umm. I live with my mother and my father's dead." I start but am cut off.
"What happened?" She asks raising an eyebrow.
"He got executed for something." A look of recognition crosses her face. It seemed to be recognition, surprise, shock and fear; all mixed together.
"What was his name?" She asks.
"Fredrick Rhys." I reply. She takes a deep breath and asks "What about your education?"
"I went to high school here in Canberra. Then I got a scholarship to Brumley but my father died and my mom wasn't strong enough to live on her own." I explain.
"Don't you have any siblings who could've looked after her?" She asks.
"I do. I have a sister but that was the year she got married. I couldn't ask her to leave her husband so soon for us." I reply casually, as if it was no big deal for me. But for me it was. Mom had kept telling me to go and pursue my dreams and that she'll be alright. But I knew better and forced myself to stay. This I've never told anyone.
"How unfortunate." She says. playing with the handle of the cup. My curiosity takes over me and I ask her "What did you mean by me causing trouble?"
She replies. "I see a future for William and Ashley. They'll be happy and will have a great family."
I realize where this conversation is headed. She continues. "They've been together for a whole year and never did they fight or even think of breaking up. But then you come and bump into him on your very first day. He asked me to give you the job. All the others who applied must've been equally desperate. But you messed up his thinking!"
She gets up and walks to the window. I turn around in my seat so that I can see her.
She keeps on talking. "I started hating you from that very first day and made Helen give you a job which would keep you out of their way. But you even with that ruined their relationship! I hated you even more the day he chose you over her."
She turns around and walks back to the table. She pulls herself onto the table and asks. "What do you have to say about this?"
"I'm really sorry that I caused trouble. Please forgive me but it's not what you think it is. William pities me because I have to pay for my mother and myself. He thinks that I'm hopeless and gave me this job because I was in desperate need of it." I explain or atleast try to.
"Good. Keep it this way. The Hawthorne's are good friends of mine. If you make a move on William, I get them to fire your mom." She threatens, leaving me shocked.
"You..." I start but Mitchell's arrival cuts me off.
"The library's now open." She announces hugging a folder to her chest.
"Good. But we won't be needing it now." I'm confused. I still have a couple of shelves to sort out. Mrs. Blake sorts out all questions in my head.
"I just heard that Cassandra's a graduate from high school. I have no idea why we're wasting such a qualification." She says hopping off the table.
"Where are you taking this?" Mitchell asks her. They seem to be close friends.
"Cassandra from now on is your assistant for managing activities but will keep the position of a housemaid too." With this we're both dismissed.
I follow Mitchell down the corridor. I can't process what just happened. She stops outside a door and turns to me. "This sunday is a royal breakfast. I know you're supposed to have Sundays off but now this is your work. The whole royal family will be attending it along with officials and their families. Now that I have an assistant, I can take some burden off my shoulders. We need to discuss things. Go have lunch and then come back here as soon as you finish."
Slowly, I make my way to the kitchen. Several thoughts run through my head. Does William have feelings for me? Does he like me? Why does she hate me so much? Why did she promote me?
No answers come up. I go in, get my tray and sit down. Anna joins me. "Hey!"
"Hi!" I rely, trying to sound cheerful too.
"Are you finished with the library?" She asks taking a sip of her water.
"Yeah." reply.
"Next assignment?" She asks.
I choose my words carefully. "I have to help Mitchell plan the royal breakfast this Sunday."
This makes her smile falter.
"What's wrong?" I ask swallowing a spoonful of rice.
"Nothing." She replies putting on a fake smile.
"Come on!" I press.
"Alright. My sister's birthday is this Sunday. She's about your age. I really hoped you would come."
"What time?" I ask her.
"Evening. Around 5.00." She replies.
"That's cool. As soon as the breakfast's over, I'll go back home, get changed and come to your house." I tell her.
"Thanks! You're the closest friend I've ever had." She says and goes back to eating.
