Kai’s POV
The night air was refreshing, but did little to alleviate the gloom that surrounded me. I stopped at the gates and didn’t even have to flash my ID to the guard.

“Slow night, Mari?” I asked, lifting my helmet and smiling to my favorite night guard.

She was a plump african lady with phenomenal character. She was like the big sister I never had and knew my secret on top of that.

“As always! Why’re you here? I thought your leave started yesterday?” Mari shot me a gentle smile and handed me one of the lollipops she always kept on her person for me.

I sighed and snatched the tangerine loli from her, “Yah, it did. I guess something urgent came up with a mission I’m working on.”

“I swear, those boys work you like a horse. You’re just a kid, you should be able to enjoy a break every once and awhile.” She shook her fist in the air.

I giggled at her antics and sucked on the candy, “It’s alright. That’s the job after all. I have to do it to keep people safe.”

“I understand your motives kiddo, just don’t lose track of your civilian life in the process. Your happiness is important too.”

“Thanks, Mari. I’ll do my best.” We high fived, “Keep up the good work.”

“You too, Baby.” she smiled and opened the gate. I love that woman. I will literally obliterate anyone who tries to hurt her.

I made my way through the gate and parked my bike in my garage before booking it to the locker room for a shower. I could still smell the chlorine on my skin.

Thankfully , the entire place was empty. It usually was at this time… the only people working were the night staff and there’d be no reason for them to take a late night shower.

I disengaged my suit and stepped into the stream. Frigid water scraped it’s way down my skin.

There’s something about cold showers that always helped me to think. Sometimes it was good, other times it just got me more riled up…

Why the hell do they have to call me in now?

I pondered this for a few more minutes as I washed the sweat, chlorine, and grime off of my hair and body.

Finally, I stepped out to air dry. The towels provided here stunk of disinfectant and were crunchy like they’d been deep fried. No thanks.

Once I was adequately dry, I flicked my wrist to turn on my holowatch and selected my mercenary suit. This was the outfit I wore most of the time while operating as Kurama.
