English class. For some reason I still had to take it even though I was fluent and literally lived there for a year. But hey, at least I didn’t have to do shit for the class.

Mic stood at the front of the class writing out phrases on the board while I spun my pen through my fingers.

I’m still exhausted even after that nap yesterday.

Maybe I’ll just rest my eyes for a few seconds.

Slowly but surely my head lowered to the desk as I drifted off to sleep.

I tell you what though, I did not go gentle into that good night.

((Bold is in English/ Italicized is dream-thoughts))

She stared into me with dead eyes like a shark looking for its next meal.

“I don’t want to hurt you.” The words fell from my mouth as a final plea for the bloodshed to end, “Please. You don’t have to be his slave.”

The girl slunk towards me with a sickening grin plastered to her sheet white face. Mildew and metal filled my nose as I prepared for the blow.

“You don’t get it do you?” She croaked out as her hands clutched the blade, “We all are. You are.”

The knife struck my chest, tearing through skin and muscle.

“I’m not!” I pushed her off of me and tore the knife out, “You don’t have to be either.”

“I won’t stop until one of us is dead.” She rushed me trying to tackle me to the ground.

In one swift motion, I grabbed her arm and pinned the knife against her neck.

“Kai!” She yelled my name and I froze. It wasn’t her voice… “Kagami! Wake up!”

My body jolted awake, the world of the living coming into view.

Pinned against the wall was Uncle Mic with my pen pressed to his neck like a blade.

My eyes widened, blinded by the bright morning light from the window. I immediately dropped the pen to the ground and uttered an apology, “Shit! I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to!”

My fingers racked through my hair as I backed up from Mic and right into a desk. Panic settled into my stomach.

I could feel every person in the class’s eyes on me.

Out. I need to get out.

I swallowed the feeling and faced my mess.

“Are you okay? I just asked you to give us a practice sentence.”

“I fell asleep. I thought you were… Nevermind. It doesn’t matter. I could’ve hurt you. I’m sorry, sensei. I’m fine now.”

It would look even more suspicious if I ran out. I just have to wait out this feeling.

I walked up to the front of the class and wrote out the first thing that popped into my head.

‘I am not your puppet.’

The words formed before I could stop them.

With one last squeak of the marker I sat back down at my desk.

“Uhhhh… can anyone tell the class what that says?” Mic seemed unsure of me.

Why am I like this?

I’ve probably scared everyone off now.

Stay awake stupid body. That’s all you had to fucking do.
