A.N.:Very cheesy stuff
“Hey, Al, d’ya want to go to the park after school?” offered Amelia. For some odd reason, I felt my cheeks start to burn. It wasn’t like this was out of the ordinary or anything. However, something felt different, but I couldn’t pinpoint what it was.
“S-sure. As long as you don’t have any homework due for tomorrow, anyway.” At times like these, I felt like a teacher, or a patronizing parent. Amelia thought for a second, then shook her head. My heart raced a bit, but I assured myself that it was no more than just two friends hanging out. Though I couldn’t help but wonder.

When the last lesson of the day had finished, and the herd of teenagers flooded the corridors, I saw Amelia waiting by my locker, her elbow resting on the door. She greeted me with that usual grin of hers, and I just rolled my eyes.
“Ready to go?” she asked, her bag once again hanging on only one of her shoulders. I managed to scold her this time, but she didn’t take any notice. Instead, Amelia took her phone out and offered me an earbud. I shrugged the swinging strap dilemma away and took the earbud, placing it in my ear. We started to head towards the park.
After around fifteen minutes of walking and listening to a band called ‘Fall Out Boy’, we arrived at the small playground. To our surprise, it was empty – except for a Japanese exchange student named ‘Sakura’.
Surrounding the playground was a large field of vibrant green grass, and within it there was various playground equipment. The equipment consisted of two swing sets, with jet black seats; a silver slide with a blue plastic ladder; a chain zip wire; a yellow and red merry-go-round; and a large swing in the shape of a bowl, looking like it could fit several people. To the right of the playground were a set of tennis courts that were covered in mud, obviously not being well cared for.
Amelia grabbed my hand and was leading me towards the swings. I found the hand holding odd as we weren’t in front of, well anyone – excluding Sakura – , so there would be no need to pretend to be a couple, but I didn’t protest. She asked me if it was okay if we went on the swings, and I nodded. I didn’t really mind what we’d go on anyway.
We sat on the swings, and Amelia started to swing herself backwards and forwards. As for myself, I decided that I’d just keep near the ground. Also, I was wearing a skirt, and that wouldn’t do well if it were caught in the wind.
Although, I couldn’t help looking at how much fun Amelia looked like she was having as her short golden locks bounced in the wind, her star hairclips catching the sunlight. Slowing herself down as she saw me stay at the bottom, she asked why I wasn’t swinging.
I started to speak, but before I could get a sentence out I realized that I was being pushed. By Amelia.
“Hey, what do you think you’re doing?” I shouted, gripping tightly onto the chains.
“You looked a lil’ down, I thought this’d cheer you up!” exclaimed Amelia, starting to giggle. It was no use; the more I complained, the higher I was pushed.
Sighing, I decided to let her carry on pushing me. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Sakura on her phone and I wondered what she was doing, but didn’t think too much of it.
Realizing that the swing was coming to a stop, I looked behind – only to see that Amelia had collapsed in a fit of giggles. Then I turned around and started to walk away, smirking. However, Amelia called me to help her up, in between heaps of giggles. For a few seconds I stopped, pretending to have a hard time deciding what to do, then went over to help her up.
Our eyes met for no more than two seconds; her cobalt blue eyes interlocking with my dull green ones. I was probably imagining it, but I thought I was her cheeks flush a rosy pink color. I then looked away, coughing.
“So… er, do ya want to go on the merry-go-round?” offered Amelia, after an age of awkward silence. Without a sound, I nodded and made my way towards it.
Being the kind girl that I am, I sat on it and requested to be spun by Amelia – something I ended up regretting. It started off slow, then sped up quite a bit. That speed was fine with me, but she carried on spinning. The merry-go-round spun so fast I could barely stay on. By the time it stopped, my hair was everywhere and I was uncontrollably laughing. I couldn’t remember the last time I had this much fun.
Then it was Amelia’s turn. I tried to make her pay, but no matter how fast I spun it, she told me to spin it faster. Soon enough, my arms started to ache and I gave up. Pouting, she jumped off and scared me by putting her hands on my shoulders and whispering, “boo”. I nearly slapped her in the face: she would’ve deserved it, anyway.
After an hour or so, the sun began to set. Sakura left a while before, and the park was left just to ourselves. We inhabited her previous space on the wooden bench. I couldn’t help thinking about how romantic the bronze sunset was.
As I was trapped in my thoughts, Amelia thought this was the perfect time to attack and started to tickle me. Screaming, I tried to push her off, but to no avail. We were both laughing away, and soon enough I managed to push her away.
In between chuckles, Amelia said something I thought she’d never say.
“I love you, you’re so cute sometimes!” Upon realizing what she had said, color flushed into her cheeks, and she stuttered. “I mean- er-“ I took this chance to get out of my comfort zone, and leaned forward, letting our lips collide, taking her by surprise. What surprised me was the fact that, instead of breaking away, she kissed me back. Her lips tasted of cinnamon-dipped apples and peanut butter. It wasn’t passionate, but it was long and tender. Breaking away, I slipped my hand into hers and subconsciously lay my head on her shoulder. We started to walk home, and I whispered back to her.
“I love you too.”
