Ashton left the penthouse apartment to take a walk. He liked being out in nature and embracing the outdoors. Although it was hard to do in L.A with the busy city and small concrete sidewalks.
He walked up to a coffee shop and bought a coffee with a cookie. Satisfied with his purchase he went outside and took a seat on the side of the road. He watched the cars pass by and enjoyed his treat.
"Mind if I sit?" A girl asked waking over.
He looked up. Her mascara ran down her face "uh no, you okay?" He asked scooting over to make her room.
She took a seat "yeah" she sniffed "no" she shook her head.
"What's bothering you?" Ashton asked.
She was surprised by the genuine tone of voice. It was like he actually cared "I ran away from home- it was stupid I know but I couldn't be there anymore" she said.
"If you don't mind me asking, why?"
"My brother, he always just did better than me in everything. He wants to be an inventor or a lawyer and here I am wanting to make music" she said gesturing to her guitar case.
"Is that the only thing you brought?" Ashton asked.
"It's the only thing I need" she said starting to cry again "I want to go home but I can't"
"Hey, I ran away from home too..." Ashton said putting his hand on her back.
"You did?" She asked.
"Yeah and I went back and they welcomed me with loving arms because that's what family does"
"I still can't go back" she said.
"Of course you can-"
"No like I don't know how to get home, I'm lost"
"Oh... I'm Fletcher by the way"
"I'm Beverly" she said wiping away tears "oh wait I have mascara on"
Ashton giggled "here" he said handing her his napkin "you look like Billie Joe" he laughed.
"Oh goodness" she said embarrassed "thanks for the napkin but I'm afraid it's gonna take more than that to clean this mess up, be right back" she said and walked into the café behind them.
"Hey I know you" someone said.
Ashton turned around and saw the tall familiar body of his friend "Jack!where've you been?" He asked.
"Eh you know" he said squinting his eyes from the sun "around" he looked up "who was that?"
"Beverly" he smiled "Have a seat" Ashton said patting a spot of grass next to him.
He shook his head "nah I'm-" he looked back to a window of the café "-I'm busy"
Ashton followed his gaze to a girl sitting alone in the café window. He smiled and nodded in understanding.
"Yeah, she's great" Jack said "she understands the whole situation"
Ashton stood up and stretched.
"Hey uh I have something you should see" Jack pulled a pice of crumpled up paper out of his pocket.
"Oh no..." Ashton said examining the wanted poster Jack held before him "why would they have them here?"
Jack shrugged "don't know. But stay out of trouble Fletch"
"Fletch?"
"Yeah Fletcher" Jack laughed and elbowed Ashton.
"Shut up" he joked and pushed him away.
"How's Luke?" He asked.
Ashton shrugged "he's good I guess"
Jack smiled "alright, so tell me about this Beverly girl"
"There's not much to tell, she ran away" Ashton shrugged.
He nodded "well better get back before Amelia gets bored, see ya"
Beverly walked out of the café with a now cleaned face.
"See ya" Ashton said watching Jack walk back into the café passing Beverly on the way.
Beverly picked up her guitar case.
"Where are you going?" Ashton asked.
"I thought you were leaving" she said.
"Yeah but I- I like kinda thought you'd come with me..?"
She stopped "Fletcher you're a really nice guy and all but I just met you.." She said.
"Well my friend she has an apartment with a lot of space, where are you going to stay?" He asked concerned.
She shrugged "I just don't feel comfortable doing that...thanks so much for the offer" she smiled.
"Hey maybe same spot tomorrow?" Ashton asked.
Beverly smiled "yeah I'd like that" she said and waved goodbye.
Ashton threw his trash away and started the walk back to the apartment. The sun had started to set leaving the sky a nice orangey red he liked. He smiled and admired it for a moment longer before continuing on his walk.
