Luke and Michael reached the grocery store entrance but froze. Two policemen stood at the front desk showing a piece of paper to a worker.
Michael swallowed hard.
"What do we do?" Luke asked.
"Just leave" Michael said backing away.
The worker glanced at him.
Michael's eyes widened.
"Hey there they are!" The worker talking to the policemen said pointing to the two of them standing at the entrance.
"Freeze!" He yelled.
"Run!" Michael said shoving Luke out the door.
The policemen chased them outside shooting at their feet.
Luke ran faster than the night they escaped. Trying desperately to never go back.
The pavement was wet from the rain that had poured down earlier and as a result it was slippery. Michael fell twice and scrapped up his hands.
"Stop!" The policeman yelled at them.
Michael turned around. They were gaining on them "Luke keep runn-" he choked. Everything seemed to move in slow motion after that. He looked down at his stomach where blood had began to seep through his shirt. He breathed in rapidly and looked up at Luke then down at his fingers that were draped with blood.
"No!" Luke yelled trying to pull Michael with him.
"Just-- go Luke" he gasped falling to the concrete.
Luke looked up. The police were only a few feet away. He hesitantly jumped into the car and started the engine. Guns shot at him and bullets flew through the window. He stepped fully on the gas pedal and sped away out of the parking lot.
"He got away!" The one yelled.
Michael laid on the ground bleeding out onto the parking lot pavement. His red blood stained the white parking lines.
"Call 911!" The man kneeled down. He took off his jacket and tied it tightly around Michael's waist to slow the bleeding.
Michael breathed in rapidly and panicked.
"Calm down" the officer said.
"How--you shot--me" he said in between breaths.
"It's going to be okay"
"No--it won't be o-kay. I'm-- going to hell" he said.
The sirens of the ambulance whirled down the road passing by Luke's speeding car. He drove blinded by tears "please be okay please be okay" he repeated "dear God please let him be okay!"
The nurses loaded Michael onto a stretcher and gave him an oxygen mask.
"Am I going to--die?" He asked.
"Just breathe sir" she instructed.
"I'm--I can't" he said "breathe--" he stopped.
"I need all teams on duty right now!" She yelled loading him into the ambulance "let's go let's go! We will not lose a life!" She rushed around the ambulance.
Michael closed his eyes. Memories played in his head. His fifth birthday party, year eight graduation, the first day of high school and the last night with his mother. All these memories were being brought back to his mind instead of staying in the old dusty box he kept them in. He smiled. He was finally at peace.
