Chapter 1

Terrence Everdeen was watching the people of District Twelve go in and out of the Hall of Justice voting for the tributes for this year's Hunger Games. He and his little brother, Gage, sat on the steps trying not to get caught by the peacekeepers.

"Who do you think will get picked?" asked Terrence.

"I don't know, maybe you so I don't have to put up with your bossiness." Gage replied.

"I boss you for your own good."

"That's Mom and Dad's job."

"I love you, too. Now, let's leave before we get caught."

When Terrence and Gage arrived home, they found their mother and sister, Ali, sitting together. As usual, their mom was telling Ali how wonderful she was. Terrence thought it was because Ali was the only girl, and the youngest. When his mom finally noticed him, she told him to get dinner started.

A week later, everyone was gathered waiting to hear who the tributes were going to be. A woman with purplish brown hair piled on top of her head walked on the stage.

"Welcome to the 25th annual Hunger Games!" announced the woman with her capitol accent, "As you know, my name is Rebecky and I will lead this year's tributes to victory in the Hunger Games. Now let's find out who you all chose."

Just as Rebecky reached in the box labeled "Girls", they heard a shout.

"Wait! I volunteer!"

Everyone was in shock, including Rebecky. Terrence turned around and found that it was one of his friends, or maybe she was just an acquaintance. Anyway, the volunteer was a girl named Rika. She was a very smart girl and was tribute material in a way.

"Well," said Rebecky, "that was an unusual turn of events. Let's find out who our boy is."

Terrence thought for a while. He thought about "perfect" Ali, Gage who never wanted him around, and his parents who pretended he didn't even exist. No one would miss him, so he took a deep breath and did the unthinkable.

"I volunteer, too!" he exclaimed.

He noticed everyone staring at him. Rebecky looked at both Terrence and Rika as they climbed onto the stage.

"Well ladies and gentlemen, here are our two tributes, Rika Valen and Terrence Everdeen."
