Chapter 4

"Okay. This is it." Terrence said to himself on the day of the Hunger Games.

He wouldn't admit it, but he was really nervous. He didn't know what to expect. What kind of monsters would be there? The next thing he knew, Terrence was standing in the arena. It looked like any other woods: Dark, creepy, and mysterious. Terrence noticed Rika. She had her eyes on another tribute. They were apparently allies. Terrence looked around some more. He saw the girl Rebecky was talking about the other day. She was tan skinned, had long dark hair, and looked ready for anything. She also looked really cheery for someone who was voted into something like this by her friends. Ten seconds Terrence thought. Ten seconds later, Terrence heard the signal and everyone was off. The first thing Terrence did was head for the woods. He ran and ran until he found a weapon for himself. It was a sword. That was something he was decently good at. He scared Gage off all the time swinging a large stick. Not knowing where to go, Terrence ran to until he found a clearing. He was tired now, so he sat down under a tree. When he regained his strength, Terrence looked up and gasped. In the center of the clearing was a huge coliseum.  When Terrence entered the magnificent building he stopped to look around. There were paintings of previous games on the walls, each painting showing how the victor won. He took another step and fell. A trap door, he thought, of course. You can't have an amazing looking structure without a trap door. When Terrence finally touched the ground he heard a growl. Then, he looked up and saw a lion, an over sized lion. It lunged at him and the next thing knew the lion was on the ground with an arrow in its neck.

"I think that deserves a thank you." said a voice. Terrence looked up and saw the girl from district seven.

"Uh, Thanks?" said Terrence. Nobody can be that cheery.

“My name's Aspyn Catalpa. Heard you and I got the highest scores. That would make us a great team. What do you think?"

"Uh, sure. Why not?" Terrence replied. Aspyn did save his life. He guessed he owed her. After Terrence agreed, they felt the floor rising. Terrence looked around and found himself in an arena.

"Only one person from each district still remains!" An announcer said, "Now it's time to face the hippogriff!"

"I'm so sorry Rika." whispered Terrence.

"Terrence," said Aspyn, "I've read about this beast. It's supposed to be mythical. It was in a book that was popular ages ago, before America was Panem."

"Well, what does it look like?” asked Terrence.

"That." Aspyn answered. Before them stood a monstrous eagle-lion thing.
