Chapter 6

"Wow!" said Aspyn, "These are amazing. How were they made?" As soon as she finished her sentence, the tunnel began to shake.

"Um, Aspyn, there's your answer." said Terrence. Aspyn looked up and found herself staring at a huge snake. The head itself was as big as she was tall. Her eyes widened and she and Terrence began to run. Aspyn had an idea. She stopped running and moved aside. Terrence, on the other hand, continued running and found himself cornered by the giant snake. He was shaking by that point and his hands were so sweaty that he dropped his sword. Now, Aspyn went into action. She jumped up as high as she could, landed on the snake’s head and plunged her arrow into its skull. Then, in a puff of dust, the snake was gone.

“What just happened?” asked Aspyn, “Where did the snake go?”

“I don’t know and I really don’t care.” said Terrence, “Let’s get out of here.” Terrence found a ladder and climbed out of the tunnels. Aspyn followed. Aspyn was only half way up the ladder when she heard Terrence.

    “Uh, Aspyn?”

“What?” Aspyn was wondering what was wrong this time. When she got up, she noticed too.

“Oh.” The forest was on fire. The only safe spot was where they were standing. That place didn’t stay safe for long. Wolves were sneaking up all around them.

“Come on Aspyn! We can take ‘em!” Terrence was really happy to see a normal animal, something that wasn’t unusually large or was mixed with another animal. Aspyn didn’t seem so happy.

    “Um, no.” she said.”

“What? Are you afraid of wolves?”

“Yes, yes I am. At least I’m not afraid of heights.”

“Well, I’m sorry that I’m afraid of falling off a cliff to my death.”

“I’m sorry that I’m afraid of being eaten alive.”

“You weren’t scared of that flying monster thing!”

“I saved you from a lion!”

“Well, you were a little too late. My friend and your district partner died.” Terrence said. Aspyn began to say something, but couldn’t think of a good come back.

“That’s what I thought.” said Terrence.

“Wait. I saved you twice, remember? The snake?”

    “The snake wasn’t real.”

“It was, at the time. You owe me your life twice.”

    “No, no I don’t.”

“Please Terrence. I don’t think I can do this. How would you feel if you were voted into these stupid games by your friends and had to face your worst fear in the same day?” Then, something unexpected happened. Aspyn cried. Terrence was shocked. Aspyn was amazing. She was athletic, smart, and a whole lot more brave than he would ever be. She was the last person he thought would ever cry, especially over something like a wolf.
