I woke the next morning, still completely confused by Spencer's sudden exit the previous night. I was just about to leave for work and I still hadn't heard from him since he took that mysterious phone call. I was actually slightly annoyed and feeling embarrassed at the state he left me in. I planned on talking to him after work today.
As I grabbed my purse and headed to work for the day, I noticed Spencer's infamous work bag sitting by the door along with his go bag from his last trip. I threw the leather bag over my shoulder, leaving the other behind for now, and left my apartment. After locking the door, I knocked on Spencer's and waited. No answer and I couldn't hear any movement inside. He must've already left for work. I pulled my phone out of my purse as I made the walk down to my car and called Spencer. He picked up after two rings.
"Liv, hey. I-"
"I know, you left your stuff at my apartment last night. I knocked on your door but I'm assuming you're already gone." I interjected.
"Yes. I overslept and left in a hurry. I'm about to leave the office so I can come get it now." He stated.
"Don't worry about it, I already left and I have it with me. I'll just bring it to you on my way to work." I replied casually.
"Oh, okay. Thanks. You didn't have to do that." Spencer replied uncomfortably.
"It's no problem. Send me the address and I'll see you soon." I said shortly.
"O-okay." He stuttered.
I gave him a short goodbye before hanging up. A text with his work address came through as I was getting into my car. Perfect timing. Thankfully he wasn't too terribly far from my own office. It was only about a 20 minute drive there, which was easy compared to the security measures I went through just to get into the parking lot. I guess it did makes sense though, considering who Spencer worked for.
I made my way to the entrance of the building, his bag slung over my shoulder. As I entered the lobby, I approached the front desk with a smile plastered on my face. A middle aged woman greeted me, asking what she could do for me.
"I'm just trying to--"
"She's with me."
Both of us turned to look in the direction the voice came from, although I recognized it instantly. Spencer approached me with a nervous smile before looking at the receptionist.
"Just a visitor's badge please, Janice." He said politely.
I watched as she handed him what he requested and thanked her as Spencer clipped the badge to the top of my dress. He took his bag from me and threw it over his shoulder before ushering me away.
"Thanks for coming by." He stated, turning to look at me.
"It's no problem." I said. My discomfort must've been obvious to him based on what he said next.
"I'm sorry I left last night." I finally looked up at him after attempting to avoid his gaze since I got here. "I know you're upset about it and that's understandable."
"What was it about?"
"It's a long story." He sighed. "But I shouldn't have left without an explanation."
"Yeah, the timing wasn't great." I blushed.
"I know, I'm an idiot. I shouldn't have left you like that. Not after what we--"
"You don't have to say it out loud." I cut in, cringing a little at the fact that we were surrounded by FBI agents and there was no telling who was listening to our conversation.
