The Head warrior was able to keep up with John who lacked much combat training due to his being the target and unable to learn and his lack in combat experience through his own combat experience and training. Even so The Head warrior could not defeat John with combat experience alone. John saw as Jade was being attacked by the other Knights however they couldn't even break her barrier which was protecting her. John knew about the gap between himself and the Head warrior and how it was closed due to combat experience. John also knew that it was also due to the Head warrior's Legendary rank gear that had the abilities to enhance the wearer's physical stats by 100,000% while giving them increased stamina and 100,000% physical damage reduction and that was modified by Dragon parts. John had far more stamina than the Head warrior. The Head warrior accidentally miscalculated and left a nano second long opening. This was enough time for John to strike. John hit the Head warrior in the gut destroying the equipment and almost killing the Head warrior. John aimed for the gut because of the equipment's skill that transferred all it's power to the gut section if attacked which made it the most protected spot but it's also why the equipment was only at legendary rank as other attacks would have more of an impact if aimed at other spots while the gut section was being hit which was no longer an issue because the Dragon parts modified it so that way the entire body would be protected rending that flaw in the armor less of a hindrance.
