Light was painfully aware of where he stood with (Y/n). He knew the other boy only saw them as friends-- brothers. God, Light hated when (Y/n) called him that. At least with friends, there was the chance to become more but with brothers, that was all they would ever be. At least, in (Y/n)'s eyes.
Truth was, at that moment, while (Y/n) was greeting his mother and father with a smile and the mandatory hug that followed every (Y/n) encounter, Light wondered where he went wrong. Where along their time together did he miss the chance to take (Y/n) for himself?
Light was snapped out of his brief train of thoughts by the very person who caused them. (Y/n) wrapped his arms around the brunette, completely unaware of what was going through Light's mind.
After they broke the hug, the two boys went up to Light's room and closed the door. (Y/n) almost immediately made himself comfortable, flopping onto the bed with a content sigh. Light, on the other hand, took a seat at his desk chair, obviously not as comfortable as the other.
"So" (Y/n) started, breaking the silence, "What did you want to show me?" Light froze, but not enough for it to be noticeable. After a few seconds of his question not being answered, the (h/c) haired boy sat up and cocked his head to the side, giving Light a confused look.
The Death Note.
When he first found it, he thought it was a joke. But after finding out it was not...
Light had told (Y/n) he would show him it on impulse. But if he showed it to him, (Y/n) would probably ask how he knew it worked and well.. Light would do anything in his power to preserve (Y/n)'s innocence. Even if it meant lying to him about the fate of thousands of criminals.
"It wasn't anything that special. I just found a movie I thought you'd like" Light said, smiling as if he was not lying to his friend's face. (Y/n) furrowed his eyebrows and frowned, but his face relaxed after a few seconds as he gave a sigh and shook his head.
"You had me all concerned over nothing" He pouted before putting the back of his hand to his forehead in a dramatic fashion, "So mean". There was a moment of silence before (Y/n) stated speaking again this time, with a small smile, "Is it animated?"
Light could not stop the bubbles of adoration he felt towards the sentence. (Y/n) had always been fond of cartoons and talking about them made him so adorably happy. "Of course it is" Light said.
Light, in his never ending pursuit of being considered good boyfriend material, always kept a stash of movies that (Y/n) would like. They had gotten him out of many different situations and as long as he kept the selection up to date, it would continue to do so.
He got the box that held said movies out of his closet and set them on his desk. (Y/n) had turned his attention to his phone, giving Light the opportunity to look through the movies. He had to work quickly; (Y/n)'s attention never stayed on one thing for too long.
"Light" (Y/n) called, earning a hum in response, "Did you know that guy, what's his name.. I think it was Takuo-Something.. anyway, he died".
Light froze. Of course, he knew Takuo died, but to hear it from (Y/n)..
It also did not help that (Y/n) said it so nonchalantly. There were a few times when every-so-often, (Y/n) would say or do something that was... off. Light simply brushed it off as some odd quirk of his. After all, (Y/n), especially when he was younger, would only see something at face value.
Someone died. That was it. Nothing more, nothing less. Light had to admit: while it was certainly strange, he too wished to have that sort of mindset. It certainty would have made what happened only an hour or two ago much easier.
No matter what mindset (Y/n) had, Light did not want (Y/n) to be pulled into his fight. Light was the one who would fix the world-- make it safe for people like (Y/n).
But for now, he would just play ignorant. "Really? What happened?" He asked. There you are. He pulled the movie's case out of the box and set it on the desk. After putting the box away, he took a seat at his desk chair and returned his attention to it's proper place: (Y/n).
(Y/n) was laying on his bed, one arm under his head and the other holding his phone. Surely most of the details of the death would not be online. At least, not yet.
"Yeah really" he said, eyes darting around the screen as he skimmed whatever he was reading, "he got hit by a truck. A couple of his friends reported what happened".
I'll bet those friends left out the part where he tried to rape that girl. Light truly tried not to let it bother him. Despite that, he could not help but think of all of the bad people in the world; the people who did not deserve to live. Takuo's friends were still out there. Surely they were almost, if not just as, bad as Takuo himself.
(Y/n)'s face scrunched into a blend of confusion and pity. "If it makes you feel any better, he was kinda a dick" he said with a reassuring smile.
"You knew him?" Light asked, a frown manifesting on his face. What would (Y/n) be up to where he would have to deal with that kind of scum? "Not personally, but I knew of him" (Y/n) said, putting his phone down and turning to lay on his side, facing Light, "Rumors and whatnot. I'm sure not all of them are true, but it's a bit suspicious that there are so many and they all say the same thing".
(Y/n), along with his ever-changing attention, abandoned his place on the bed to look over Light's shoulder at the movie he chose. A smile played at his lips as he read the title. "I heard of that one, but I've never seen it!" He said before turning that smile to Light, "You know me so well".
Just like that, the two had gone from the world's calmest talk about death, to watching a colorful, animated film that was probably aimed to children, but Light was not going to point that out.
Unlike (Y/n), who was giving the movie all of his attention and could not care less about the world around him, Light could not seem to focus on the screen. His mind was still having that conversation. More specifically, he was going over scenarios in his head in which he used the conversation about a death to segway into one about the Death Note.
In some versions, (Y/n) fully accepted Light and agreed to help him rid the world of evil. However, in the more realistic versions, the Death Note would scare (Y/n) off and he would refuse to talk to him.
(Y/n) nudged Light's side. He had a slight frown on his face and curiosity glinted in his eyes. "What's wrong? You have that weird, 'I'm thinking about something scary' look on your face" He said, laughing quietly at his own words.
(Y/n) was there with Light. The conversation had not happened, (Y/n) did not fear him, the two were fine. Theoretically, there was nothing to worry about. But still, he could not risk ruining their relationship, even if it meant (Y/n) would never know of his plans or how he would follow through with them. It would be better that way. (Y/n) would stay with him and Light could finally protect him, just as he promised all those years ago.

In case anyone was wondering (even though no one was), just remember that Light's personality changed a lot in the first few episodes. We'll get to more yandere behavior as the story continues.
