I held my phone to my ear as it ring until he finally answered.
"Talk to me."
I always hated how he answered his phone.
My mouth was open and I wanted to speak, but I didn't know what to say.
"Gia. Is that you?" He asked.
"Yeah, it's me."
"Wassup little sis?" He exclaimed. How could he disappear for nine years, then act as if he was here the entire time.
"Where were you?" I ignored his question.
"Damn, I don't get a greeting? If you must know, I was in Vermont."
Vermont? I don't know anyone in Vermont. We don't have any family in Vermont. Why was he in Vermont?
"Did you say Vermont?"
"Yeah."
"Why were you in Vermont?"
"I was being framed for murder." He sighed.
I had to take the phone away from my ear for a minute to make sure I had heard him correctly.
"Ty, what the fuck, you killed someone?"
"Chill G, I said I was being framed."
"Who was framing you?"
"I can't tell you." He paused. "But I handled it and I'm back now, so that's all you have to worry about."
"Can you just give me the details?" I pleaded.
"I was in some trouble with some people, and they tried to frame me for murder of someone that they killed. So I went somewhere they wouldn't find me, which was Vermont. The been chasing me down, framing, and trying to kill me for nine years. But you don't have to worry about anything because it's over now."
"You couldn't call, write a letter, shoot me an email or something?"
"Gia, they was trying to find me since I left. If I did anything of that, they could have found me."
"There's no payphones in Vermont?" I questioned. I know he could have contacted us, but he just chose not to.
"Gia, can we just meet up somewhere and talk."
"No, I just want answers." I responded.
"So, you haven't seen me in nine years, and you don't want to see how I've changed?"
He already knew the answer to that question. I couldn't deny that I wanted to see how different he looks now.
"No."
"Alright." He said before changing the subject. "So I heard you have a boyfriend now."
"Yeah."
"So when can I meet him?"
I had no idea why Tyrell had a sudden interest in my life when he hadn't in nine years. I understand his situation, but I didn't like that he just came back after such a long time acting as if nothing had happened.
"Ty, I gotta go. I'll talk to you later." I hung up.
I was genuinely happy that Tyrell wanted to come back into the family, but I think that we have to work hard to get back to that perfect friendship that we had once had.
I looked down at my phone that had lit up. It was a text message from Josh.
Josh: Cookout next week!
Every year, Josh's mother had at least one cookout. Josh's mother was like a second mother to me. She was there for me when Tyrell left, and when Daddy had beat mommy and I. Josh's mother was also an amazing cook, and I loved when she had cookouts.
I was really excited for this year's cookout since I would be bringing Trey with me if he isn't busy. I just hope there isn't any drama between Josh and his siblings since the barely got along.
Before texting Josh back, I texted Trey to see if he would be able to come with me.
Gia: Are you free next week?
Trey: Yeah, why?
Gia: I want you to come to Josh's family cookout with me.
Trey: Anything for you
After texting Trey, I text Josh back to let him know that I'll be there.
Gia: Thanks for letting me know. Tell mama that I'll be there with a +1.

What's gonna happen at the cookout?
Should Gia go see her brother for the first time in years?
What happened to Gia's father? (Remember, he was abusive, but I never revealed how and why he isn't in the story... for now.)
